Surely you cannot. A good 1/2 of my facebook friends are students or former students. My students don't exactly fall into the same demographics as people far away in the West do. I keep certain discussions off my facebook wall because they might be inflammatory to people without the high levels of education possessed by many of the posters here. There's also an age--and by extension, wisdom--difference between the two mediums. I post certain things there and certain things here because the audiences are not the same, and I value the feedback I get here, the interaction, and the arguments. I was joshing you about John Dehlin.
Wuap just called his students dumb. Yikes.

I am honestly not surprised you disagree with what happened, I mean you are the same guy who taught his children to run when encountering a bully. So maybe the cops should start running from criminals too.

You are over complicating a simple matter. The current phenomenon of social media outrage over isolated incidents of alleged police brutality is a classic case of mob justice. Of course it involves a large number of people. That is why it is effective. And that is why we call it a mob. And all mobs are made up of individuals, each of which plays a small role.

Clearly you and I have a different opinion regarding the impact of public shaming on cases like this. When you say "I'm perfectly fine with the authorities taking their time to see what really happened, but...", do you honestly think that these cases are processed fairly once they blow up nationally? Seriously?
        .
You're exactly right. By all accounts this guy was an excellent cop and the student liked him. IF he was out of line then a suspension, probation, or some retraining would typically occurred but not a termination. This guy was fired because of the public shaming and a boss that's a complete wuss. My bet is that the boss has lost a lot of credibility with his subordinates.

Wait, I thought you said that you said precisely zero words about this on social media? My faith in your honesty and trustworthiness has been destroyed.

Sometimes I think you're not really all that dumb, and then you post stuff like this and I doubt my doubts.

I'm not over-complicating something. You accused me of being part of a lynch mob. By extension then, anyone who posts anything online about something that bothers them is part of a lynch mob if something happens to someone who did something/nothing wrong. The logic is perfectly imperfect. Which is why I compared it to silencing people. Say something about something you dislike? LYNCH MOB!

You are over-generalizing. I think you understand my point, but are trying to paint this as a "silencing" issue to garner some sympathy. Good luck.

Other than being demonized in the press for awhile, and a few death threats, what was the final fall-out? He didn't lose his job like this last cop did.

To be honesty (and I'm not speaking about THIS case in particular) - I think that quite often the problem is that the folks who are up in arms about whatever it is that happened got that way based on very limited facts and understanding. But they already know what should happen, what the consequences should be, etc. And the reality is that maybe they should shut up, or be silenced as you say.

Research indicates that people are most inclined to believe the first story/description they hear about an incident, and more inclined to view a second version that deviates factually from the first as incorrect or even an out and out lie. Unfortunately, this means that we often have people up in arms and jumping to conclusions based on little or no information, and much of the time based on at least some of the facts related to the the incident in question being assumptions or conjectural.

That isn't a good way to make decisions.

And in no way am I saying people shouldn't ask questions or demand accountability. I'm saying that often the demand for accountability comes before all the facts are even known.
