      • This is fascinating to me.

A new study suggests that police officers in Oakland, California, are more likely to speak to white community members with a higher level of respect than black community members. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday, used police body camera footage as data.

        • The dash cam video from the Philando Castile shooting was released today. Good Lord, that was hard to watch. Not sure how not one person on that jury didn't find some guilt of manslaughter.

probably because they had no clue if the guy was reaching for his gun or his wallet/ID. if the guy was reaching for his gun, the cop had no choice. if he was reaching for his wallet, it seems manslaughter would be appropriate. alas, it is impossible to know.

When I get pulled over by the cops I always roll the window down, put my wallet and registration on the dash in front of me with my drivers and concealed handgun license out and put my hands on the the steering wheel at 10 and 2 before the cop gets to the side of my car. It makes me nervous when they put their hand on their guns so I like to take the edge off of the situation. Although I think I could take them in a quick draw, however.

I sat next to this guy on a flight back from LA a few weeks back. Super cool dude. I had never heard his music, but I actually remembered this video because his name was unique. He said it was the first time anyone had ever told him "hey, you're that guy from the youtube arrest video" instead of "Hey, you're that guy from Nashville Star" or whatever that Country Music American Idol thing is called.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

Just saw this, and the transcript of the audio. Without a doubt, that cop should not be a cop. He isn't anymore, but like you I can't believe no one thought he was guilty of manslaughter.

I eagerly await the NRA's full-throated defense of the second amendment in support of his unjust killing.

I agree I don't see how the dashcam tells us anything one way or the other.

He could have been reaching for his gun or at least appearing to reach for his gun.

It's tragic but unless you were there looking into the car I don't think you know what happened.

For the record I think the poor guy was probably just reaching for his wallet/ID based mainly on the fact that it turned out that he was an upstanding citizen and normal guy. The cop doesn't know that and maybe the victim even accidentally or absentmindedly reached for his gun. Who knows?

You should read the audio transcript. I think it makes it pretty clear that the cop overreacted beyond a reasonable level. Also, it would be pretty stupid for the driver to announce that he has a gun, and try to reach for it if he was planning to shoot the cop.

really dont know how you can watch the video and not fault the cop. he told the cop he had a gun and he was told to get his ID. cop cant wait 1 second before unloading 7 shots?

because criminals never do stupid things. not saying this guy was a criminal, but the cop didn't know whether or not he was at the time.
