  • Now it's being reported that Trump would like to bar non citizens from using banks, apparently including legal residents. The details haven't been worked out yet, according to the article. Of course there would be some existing legal barriers, but it goes back to a core underlying philosophy of the administration: foreigner= bad.

The Trump administration is considering requiring banks to collect proof of citizenship from customers via an executive order, multiple outlets reported on Tuesday.

The big picture: In addition to President Trump's expansive deportation efforts, his administration has escalated efforts over the past year to cut off noncitizens from access to jobs, aid and financial services.

    • I work with a guy whose family came over from Vietnam as refugees. He was born here, so he's a US citizen, but his uncle is not. And his uncle had a deportation order many years ago. Problem is his uncle's father was a US soldier, and Vietnam doesn't want him back.

So my friend comes in every few days to talk about things. Says I'm his therapist as I listen to him. It's been hard on his family just not knowing what's going to happen.

Miller is also very adept at knowing what would go over well with the big boss and carrying it out. That's probably why he's the only one who has worked for Trump the entire time during both terms. What he's doing is what Trump likes.

                • Would anyone bet the farm on ICE telling the truth?

Federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security entered a residential building owned by Columbia University early Thursday morning and detained a student, the school said in a letter to the campus.

Claire Shipman, the university’s acting president, said that Columbia officials believed that the federal agents had misrepresented themselves to gain access to the building, saying that they were searching for a “missing person....

The student who was detained, Ellie Aghayeva, is a senior majoring in neuroscience and political science, according to a statement released by her friends to a faculty organization, the American Association of University Professors.

She is an international student with a visa, the statement said. She appeared to have been taken from her Columbia-owned apartment on West 121st Street...

A roommate opened the door to Ms. Aghayeva’s apartment. Once the superintendent realized that the visit was not about a missing person, he called campus security, which then called the Police Department, Mr. Lasher said.

Brad Hoylman-Sigal, the Manhattan borough president, said in a social media post that the immigration police had shown a phony missing persons bulletin for a 5-year-old girl, and that they had fake badges.

“They purposefully deceived campus housing/security to gain entry to the student’s apartment,” he said. “The level of civil rights violations that took place is staggering.”

Was his uncle's father - the US soldier - also a US citizen? If so, doesn't that also confer citizenship on him?

Not unless he applies for citizenship by 18, which has long since passed. The Amerasian Children Act gives preferential immigration to Vietnam War kids of US soldiers, but the chances of this administration deciding that the burden of proof wasn't met is pretty much a given.
