It speaks to the nominee's character. Perfectly relevant.
    I said it had relevancy.

Just found it juvenile to publicly spat on this.. And in the realm of all of this. What impact will it have on his notion to pass. Zilch.

Hey I agree with you mostly on this Dabrockster. Paul had a right to bring it up and it has some relevancy, but it has turned into a personal vendetta for Paul. He admitted later that if MarkWayne apologized to him he could vote for him, as if the only thing preventing him from being an adequate DHS leader was his inability to apologize for a grudge.

Paul should have roped MarkWayne's refusal to apologize for his parroting of the administration's demonizing of Good and Pretti. That speaks much more to his fitness to lead than his refusal to be a grown-up to Paul.

      • Noem and Bovino are gone because of shit they spewed, encouraged or tolerated. Mullen's opinions on violence absolutely matter. He's the same guy who challenged a union president to throw hands, and said he thought dueling was legal. He is way too comfortable with physical altercations.

Exactly! So, an apology is all you need? Comes across as petty to me and spineless in his contempt for him. Focus on the unapologetic killings and focus on if he plans to put training in place of agents. Ask if they are going to pursue criminal charges of agents actions that are outside of the law. We will mandate working with local authorities going forward. Ask if he plans to remove unqualified hires.

And as I already stated, focus the anger issues when he postured up on the other guy. He made it a farce and whiffed on real accountability by making it about an apology to him. The agency is a pharia and that isn't going to change unless you address these issues.

I agree with this. Mullen will likely be a disaster in waiting as he tries to lead such a large organization with his main managerial response being to threaten people when things don’t go his way.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. He was a dick to Paul at a time when it wasn't appropriate. I don't blame Rand. He deserved to be called out. Other than that, I have no problem with the nomination.

              • Mullin's refusal to apologize or back down from such an egregious statement speaks to his character. This isn't just a silly grudge - his comments at the time could have prompted another attack. Expecting someone to apologize for that is a extremely low bar. If he can't bring himself to do that, he has no business leading such an important agency. What an a-hole.

You have no argument from me there. MarkWayne is a clown and parrots Trump's worst attributes. The decent thing would have been to apologize to Paul and the families of Good and Pretti. But since cabinet members must never back down to stay in Trump's good graces, this is what we get.

Having said that, I still think Paul let this grow into a personal vendetta. One question is fine, but he kept harping on it.

I haven't been following any of this hearing at all, and I don't know much about this Mullin guy, so my question isn't about whether he showed any contrition or remorse for saying/doing stupid/offensive things, but can anyone think of any remorseful statement made by any politician in recent history? (Not counting getting caught in an affair or some other dalliance) I am drawing a blank on this.

Not in the era of Trump.

Not from MAGA. I don't think Trump has apologized for anything.

Obama apologized for some stuff related to ACA

After promising Americans they could keep their existing health insurance plans, Obama apologized for those who received cancellation notices, telling NBC News: "I am sorry that they are finding themselves in this situation based on assurances they got from me".

Obama apologized to the families of American Warren Weinstein and Italian Giovanni Lo Porto, who were killed in a U.S. drone strike targeting an Al-Qaeda compound in Pakistan.

After calling California Attorney General Kamala Harris the "best looking attorney general in the country" during a fundraiser, a comment criticized as sexist, Obama called her to apologize for the remark.

Shortly after his election, Obama joked about not wanting to engage in a "Nancy Reagan thing" regarding seances. He apologized to the former First Lady for the comment

While discussing his poor bowling skills on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Obama joked that his game was "like the Special Olympics," and later apologized for the "careless and off-handed remark".

That's from google AI. I'm sure we find plenty from W and slippery Bill.

That’s not the right question. Your point essentially encourages a race to the bottom. Why should I act civilly if others don’t? This is the opposite of what we should be seeking from our elected leaders.
