  • Wouldn’t the $10 million had been more timely if it had been given before Trump won if they wanted to help his campaign
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

The two major parties always try to keep independents and third parties off the ballot. I don't agree with it, but this is nothing new. Republicans do it just as much. In this case it's especially dumb because RFK hurts Trump more.

      • Interesting NYT podcast today about Walz. His general likability could be offset by his extreme liberal record as governor the last two years. He has had the benefit of a democratic house and senate in Minnesota so he be basically rammed through everything they could - kind of like Ron DeSantis in Florida but the other way around. Abortion, gun control, medical treatments for trans minors, etc.

I wonder if they will regret cowering to the antisemitic core of the democratic party and not picking the more moderate Shapiro. Time will tell.

I've seen reporting that Harris just didn't get along with Shapiro. Others reporting that his own abilities and ambitions would overshadow her own, which she didn't want. Both of these may be true but antisemitism clearly was factored in as well.

Ezra Klein argued yesterday that Harris and Shapiro are a lot alike in many ways. Both attorneys, AG experience, highly educated. He think Walz might better appeal to working class people. He thinks it was the strategic pick.

I have a very good friend who is progressive. He is knee deep in their policy world. His understanding of the progressive strategy is that the majority independents are turned of by Trump and, if they vote, it will be for Harris. Their turnout focus is on the youth (who are overwhelmingly progressive) to shore up the winning coalition. The youth don't like Isreal and they love unions. The having sex with a couch joke Walz dropped last night was a nod to the youth. He himself believes this will work.

How are folks concluding anti-semitism played a role?

This seems like an extremely online POV. Youth are a notoriously unreliable voting demographic and they're not an ideological monolith. Risky strategy.

It's not that Harris is anti-semitic, but that Dem voters are increasingly so and they wouldn't support a Jewish VP.

I agree. And I'm not sure the majority of the independent vote is in the bag for Harris.

Careful, that rhetoric is scary. It'll trigger people! Really though, they aren't communists.
