If it slightly looks like they are trying to cover up anything (Ie., cover their asses) then, yes, the Biden administration will be blamed. This is a huge screw up by the SS. Joe would be smart to call for a special investigation now.

That would make sense, but I worry the results wouldn't suffice for MAGA even if it conclusively cleared the admin and it was demonstrably a lone-wolf event.

He'll be a divisive and shitty president, just like he was before. Look at countries where dictators rise. They are political and economic messes. The US is the most powerful country in the world. just because larpers on the left and right want radical change doesnt mean it will happen.
This is naive. Presidents as a matter of law now have immunity. If elected, he and those that support him will leverage it to their advantage in ways none of us have yet fully contemplated.

        • Is Trump a despicable human being? Absolutely. Will it be the end of democracy if he wins? Of course not. Will I vote for Trump? Absolutely not.

The whole end of democracy is such stupid hyperbole. It's straight scare tactics and it sucks. I heard the exact same stupid talk about Obama from my right leaning friends and family. "If Obama wins, this country is through! He will destroy us all!"

It is so not helpful on either side. I hatte it.

Badass? Come. On. It was a supreme act of recklessness. Not one minute had gone by after the shots were fired. Who knows what kind of additional danger was out there? And Trump being Trump, he couldn't resist making it all about him.

Nonsense. Show all the toughness and leadership you want, later in the day when everything is settled down and all the danger is known to be neutralized. Hell he can even appear outside a hospital window with the blood still on his face. Let him show it then, not when a bunch of secret service are risking their lives to save his.
Listen, I hate trump too, but your response here is ridiculous. The guy almost got his head blown off and a moment later he was probably feeling a gigantic sense of relief that he wasn't dead and a surge of adrenaline and emotion that neither your nor I have likely experienced in our lifetimes. I don't blame him at all for what he did. Not everything he does has to be broken down to a crass political calculation.

I agree it was a massive failure.

You don't understand the recent Supreme Court ruling. I'm with LC and USUC; this kind of talk is extremely unhelpful from either side. People are responsible for their own actions but if you tell people Hitler is rising enough times eventually some of them will feel compelled to stop Hitler by any means necessary. Not unlike the Jan 6 crowd that was lied to about the election enough times they felt justified in rioting. These are not smart people on either side that go this far. They are fanatics. But the smart leaders in both parties stoking the fires and raising the temperature for 8 years bear some responsibility for where we are.

                    • I'm sincerely thankful Trump wasn't killed (and I believe my feelings about DJT are fairly clear), but within a few minutes after it was clear he was going to be okay I thought, perhaps inappropriately, of Patton right after he had strongly disputed the visiting British generals' claim that they had air superiority, and they were then strafed by a couple of Nazi fighters. Patton said if he could he'd "find those Nazi sunuvabitches and give them each a medal." Rather than remove Trump from the race, the shooter pretty much ensured his election.

For some reason, I thought of Teddy Roosevelt finishing his campaign speech in Milwaukee after taking a bullet and figured the Secret Service wouldn’t allow that today.

Only 150 yds, stationary target, shooter in a prone, supported position . . .

Maybe the shooter was just a really poor shot.

Yup, that too. Loved his line, speaking to the audience, “I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot.”

It wasn’t a crass political calculation. It was instinct on his part. He adores getting adored, and in a moment when he should have worried more about his safety than his image, he did exactly what you’d expect him to do. Those few seconds were the perfect distillation of what Trump is.

I despise Trump for many things. This doesn’t register as one of the more important things to worry about. But it isn’t ridiculous to fault him for showing us again what he is. At the very least, let’s not put him up on the badass pedestal or suggest he’s a better leader because of it.
