All you guys throat clearing with "I'm glad he's not dead because of the consequences of that" and not just glad someone wasn't assassinated need some self reflection. Yeesh.

I have actually self-reflected a lot on my feeling about Donald Trump. I think he and his brand of populism are a political scourge that will take us a long time to overcome. As such I have felt for years that if he died of a brain aneurism I would probably say a silent prayer of gratitude and another silent prayer of hope that the republicans could move past him and be a grown-up party again that could provide the kind of checks and debate we desperately need. But that is different than just wanting him dead out of hatred. I think a successful assassination in this broken political environment would be the spark next to our powder keg. I think actual civil war is not realistic but real sustained civil unrest and violence that would eclipse the late 60s and early 70s is definitely something that could happen.

It was either a huge failure by the SS… or an inside job. The SS should have had people posted on spots with a line-of-site shots like this.

He showed toughness and resolve instead of mumbling and forgetfulness. I don’t like Trump but he’s showing himself to be a much better leader than Biden given his reaction. Remember when W got praised for not wearing a bullet proof vest when he threw out the first pitch in the first NY baseball game after 9/11. Projecting strength is a good thing in leaders.

Hell he can even appear outside a hospital window with the blood still on his face. Let him show it then, not when a bunch of secret service are risking their lives to save his.

There is a reason dictators are strongmen. It's an effective tool to project strength. Putin has gone out of his way to cultivate that. This is very beneficial for his campaign.

He'll be a divisive and shitty president, just like he was before. Look at countries where dictators rise. They are political and economic messes. The US is the most powerful country in the world. just because larpers on the left and right want radical change doesnt mean it will happen.

Those concerns aren't invalid because of today. He absolutely is dictatorial. America is not magically immune from authoritarianism. Your pretending he hasn't pushed and broach our political guardrails, and now after having survived an assassination attempt that he isn't going to be even less restrained is wishful thinking. He participated in orchestrated and attempt to overthrow the results of a legitimate election. That's not something that is normal.
