  • NYTimes hates Mamala Harris... They raise a good point about the coronation of Hillary Clinton in 2016. It seems history is repeating itself.

Democrats Deserved a Contest, Not a Coronation

The last two times Democrats attempted to stage a coronation instead of a contest in choosing a presidential nominee, it did not go well. Not for Hillary Clinton in 2016. Not for Joe Biden this year.

So why would anyone think it’s a good idea when it comes to Kamala Harris — the all but anointed nominee after barely a day?

Maybe the answer is that a competitive process, either before or during the Democratic convention, would have been divisive and bruising. Or that Harris’s fund-raising advantages over any potential rival were already insuperable. Or that Democratic Party big shots (though not Barack Obama, at least not publicly yet) genuinely think the vice president is the best candidate to beat the former president.

But the one thing the Democratic Party is not supposed to be is anti-democratic — a party in which insiders select the nominee from the top down, not the bottom up, and which expects the rank and file to fall in line and clap enthusiastically. That’s the playbook of ruling parties in autocratic states.

It’s also a recipe for failure. The whole point of a competitive process, even a truncated one, is to discover unsuspected strengths, which is how Obama was able to best Clinton in 2008, and to test for hidden weakness, which is how Harris flamed out as a candidate the last time, before even reaching the Iowa caucus. If there’s evidence that she’s a better candidate now than she was then, she should be given the chance to prove it.

Or perhaps that’s what party leaders fear. They seem as determined to ignore Harris’s manifest weaknesses as they were to ignore Biden’s — right up until the fiasco of last month’s debate. Weaknesses such as:

She’s unpopular: As of July 22, only 38.3 percent of Americans approve of Harris, as against 51.4 percent who don’t, according to 538. She has not had a positive approval rate since September 2021. Why would Democrats rush to nominate a candidate who’s been so consistently underwater with the electorate?

She’s been a bad campaigner: In her only truly competitive election victory, for California attorney general in 2010, she beat her Republican opponent by less than a percentage point while Democrats won the other major statewide races by 10 points or more. In her race for the 2020 presidential nomination, she effectively appointed her sister, Maya, to run her campaign. A 2019 Politico story summed up the dysfunction: “Aides describe a bleak environment in which workers have started to openly question the judgment of managers after seeing colleagues marched out the door.”

She’s been a bad manager: “The quartet of soon-to-be-empty desks reignited questions about why Harris churns through top-level Democratic staff, an issue that has colored her nearly 18 years in public service,” The Washington Post reported in December 2021, following a series of high-level staff exits. “Staffers who worked for Harris before she was vice president said one consistent problem was that Harris would refuse to wade into briefing materials prepared by staff members, then berate employees when she appeared unprepared.”

She has a penchant for excruciating banality: “It is time for us to do what we have been doing,” she told NBC’s Craig Melvin. “And that time is every day.” These and her many other Jack Handey-style Deep Thoughts are being weaponized by the Trump campaign in social media memes. They cut deep because they underscore a widespread perception, quietly shared by many Democrats, that Harris is a lightweight.

NYT is upset with the democrats' letting Biden go for another term and stick the Ds with Kamala, rather than an open primary.

        • Republican lines of attack on Kamala so far are stupid (shocker) and will not resonate. No one really gives AF on how a political party chooses to select their nominee.

I've been getting a funny one about how she's already been doing the job since Biden can't. Therefore she is responsible for the border, for runaway inflation, and worst of all, "for taking the American Dream away from millions of families." Man, maybe Ted has been right this whole time about everything.

Agreed. There are so many policy positions and sounds bites people can use against her. They’d be smart to roll out another one of her odd and old positions each week. I mean, there was no primary for her so the GOP can now dictate the primary attacks and force her to respond to them….or they can continue to follow Trump and just pour about the fact she’s the presumptive nominee.

This misses the point. In fairness, almost everybody is missing the point.

The point is not that the Democratic Party is using an undemocratic method to appoint Kamala Harris as its nominee. Not that it's not true, though it is no less democratic than how parties have selected their nominees for almost the entire history of the country.

The point is that Kamala Harris is being made the nominee without having to undergo effectively any scrutiny at all.

If Biden had dropped out a year ago and there had been a full and fair primary process, Kamala Harris would not have won the nomination. No way would she had weathered the storm and prevailed against her other party members. She is a nominee based not on quality, but expediency.

As soon as the euphoria of having a candidate from this epoch fades and Democrats realize that Harris is no Obama, the situation could become very uncomfortable for them.

In fairness this cuts both ways. She had been scrutinized. She is not an unknown. She is Vice President, and regardless her individual leanings, she is saddled with the Biden administration success and foibles. She does not have time to distance herself from Biden era policies and issues. It is already very uncomfortable for her and the democrats.

All you say above is true. And I believe I have expressed similar thoughts in a couple posts. Kamala's shortcomings will become readily apparent as the weeks pass. Agreed that the Democrats did themselves no favors with how they handled the nomination process the past two years, but that is their issue. So if you are the DJT campaign, why open a line of attack on the selection process? Who GAF about that? Certainly not the electorate. They should pivot to talking about her record as the farthest left senator in America during her tenure and all her awkward misses on what she was supposedly in charge of as VP.

And Kamala would be smart to lock up Mark Kelly as VP nominee if he is even remotely interested. VP selection shouldn't and usually doesn't move the needle. But Kelly could help soften some of Kamala's policy preferences that are most distasteful to the center that she needs to pull off a victory.

She hasn't even come close to being scrutinized. Not as a presidential candidate anyway.

Exactly. All this lavish praise of Biden for putting country first makes me want to barf. He stepped down at least a year too late. The damage has been done.

What you're really saying is he shouldn't have run for president in the first place. Or, at least as he was running he should of stated upfront: "I am running to be president for one term."

Omaha is correct. "Republican lines of attack on Kamala so far are stupid (shocker) and will not resonate ... They should pivot to talking about her record as the farthest left senator in America during her tenure and all her awkward misses ..." But the republicans won't because focusing on her selection falls in line with "the election was stolen" narrative.
