Quick question, Do excercise bike and treadmill miles count? My participation may depend on the answer.

Not my call, but I'd vote "yes" on treadmills, but probably "no" on the exercise bike, as I think the latter doesn't provide an accurate measure of distance. But if that makes the difference in your participation, I'm all for inclusion. Just make sure you sweat a lot.

Are exercise bikes really that far off? What about trainers?

Are we really entering swimming as miles? Couldn't we (and by we, I mean you, Moliere ) just change the multiplier to convert meters to miles running? Like say, 1/400?
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

In truth, I don't really know. In my VERY limited experience on exercise bikes (one is a Lifecycle I bought in 1987 and which still works!), they're not very reliable, and one can rack up megamiles by reducing the resistance to near zero. If you or others believe they offer a reasonably close approximation, then I'd include them, especially for those who might have no outdoor option as winter approaches.

I think both would be fine as long as people aren't cheating on the miles on the bike. It's tough for the northern CSers to get out on the bike so it's only fair to allow exercise bikes....well except the one PAC has described above.

No idea on trainers as I've never used one. I say that, similar to exercise bikes, if the miles are legit then have at it. If someone really feels compelled to cheat in a competition like this then they need their head checked.

Would meters be easier? I really don't know. Strava makes me input my swims in miles so I just convert using Google and I was at work on a boring conference call when I updated the spreadsheet and didn't think much about it. If meters are easier then I'll change it.

Wow, look at Mr. Big Tent all of a sudden.

In light of the large money prizes at stake here I am in favor of letting people use indoor equipment. I don't think that trainer/exercise bike miles are all the same nor really equivalent to outside bike riding, but isn't the goal here to have a collegial activity that encourages us to exercise? So why not? I think you made the correct call.
                PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Agreed. I can tell you that, based on my own data, calorie burn on a treadmill/trainer is not equivalent to getting out on the road, but who cares? It's a rule that applies to everybody. I draw the line at ellipticals, though - I don't want DDD throwing down his mega miles and young knees.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

Ellipticals are definitely out. Like out out. I imagine if you went to one of those female-only health clubs they would have wall to wall ellipitcals.

If YO is doing it then I'll sign up, I haven't tried to run since the spring when I re-tweaked my back.

                          OK,

I am in. My indoor bike tracks watts. Usually I am in the 120-140 range and 75-90 RPM. No level zero rides for me.

                            Also,

I wear a fitbit that tracks steps/distance throughout the day. Are we disqualifying steps/mileage accumulated during the day such as walking around the office and only taking miles accumulated excercising?

This is what I'm going to do. I was under a no exercise order my my doctor for a month. I averaged 1.5 miles a day during that 4 weeks. I'll take my daily Fitbit count and subtract 1.5 for my daily total. This encourages me to do a lot more movement during the day, and not just normal work out time.
