It doesn't matter how much longer the new clubs made DT...they didn't make him straighter.

It was all mental. He didn't like them and had to get rid of em. I agree, because he played like shat in our tourney with them.

I hope these Adams get your head right. You didn't tell me the 3 and 4 were Hybrid...

Disclaimer: I live at sea level and my yardage is much different than Utah. For example, my 24 year old son can/will hit a 9 iron 170 yards at altitude. In Oregon he hits a 9 iron 150. Also, I'm talking yardage for a person over 40. "Kids" under 40 typically hit the ball father. My remarks were more inclined to my standards rather than the population as a whole. However... I bet I could win 9/10 match plays with the debate respondents.

I agree to... If you hit a standard lie/length 8 iron 165 yards with a standard 80% swing - yeah there's no problem. If you strong the loft and and add 1/2" to the shaft to get extra yardage, then whats the point.

If you ever get a chance to play with a zero handicap person, you'll notice one thing in particular, they full swing, but way below 100% and consistent. I play with 2 guys that are Zero's, and they have the most beautiful swings. One guy is 50, 5'8" about 170, and hits it on average 280+ (sea level). He hits an 8 iron 145 +-3 yards. He actually gets made when his yardage is "in between clubs." Me... I'm just lucky to augment a couple of birdies with my 7-10 bogie's in 18 holes. I do have my good days though... when you get a hot putter.

          Also, speaking of new clubs...

If one were in the market for new wedges, what would you recommend? Titliest Vokey? Cleveland CG15's? Taylormade? I have an older Adams SW with more dents and dings than my first car and an old Cleveland lob wedge with worn out grooves (which I hardly use anyways...) Any one better than the other? Since the A4's PW is 45 degrees, I was thinking of a 50 degree gap wedge and 56 degree SW, then a 60 deg. lob wedge which i'll use only when I want to throw strokes away.

I am not going to order the matching A4 wedges since I really don't care if it is a matching set, and I can get them cheaper on Ebay. The A4's were 109.00 a pop to special order. Its hard to justify that price when the whole set cost 399 on Ebay.

Those Idea's are nice - have you seen the black models? I was watching a used set on Ebay that ended up going for $1,000. What shaft are you thinking? If you're over 45 think about some stiff graphites to get the shaft weight to about 80-90 grams. That will keep your swing speed up as you age another ten years.

With the new groove rules, go for last years models. The new rules won't effect the average golfer till 2015. Don't give up spin control until you have to.

I am 35 and have a pretty fast swing speed (100-110mph 7 iron according to the machine at the pro shop.) I went with the stock True Temper Dynamic Gold SL S300 steel shafts. The hybrids are the Mitsubishi Rayon Javln FX in stiff graphite. There was a set that had the Royal Precision Project X 5.0 flighted shafts, but they were about $200 more.

The Adams Pro Blacks are very nice, there was a set at the pro shop. I am not ready for a set of blades.

Spin Control is something I am trying to learn. It would be nice to be able to have the ball check up on demand.

Those S300's will serve you fine. They are what I had at your age. Sounds like you'll have a nice set up.

What is your handicap? If it's in the teens, the clubs you use isn't going to make a lot of difference. Take the money and find a cool golf package.

I am making at the point where I am pretty consistently battling with 100, breaking it a few times at the end of the summer. I need to take some lessons or something to take that just to get into the low 90s with an occasional 88. If I could get there I would be happy.

I think it is all about putting, I probably average 45+ putts a round.

When you go hit a bucket of balls, take the full bucket to the putting green and work on that before you hit them on the range. Stay in the same spot and putt one ball to one hole, another to the next hole, the next ball to the next hole, etc. until you've putted every ball. Then go around to each hole and finish up until all the balls are in the cups. If you want to do it a 2nd or even 3rd time, do it. The more you do it the better.

As you're finding out, putting is the key to lower scores. In a round, I would much rather get a 5 on a par 4 because I got to the green in 3 and two putted rather than get on the green in 2 and three putt. Yes, it's the same score, but it's always better to have the fewest amounts of putts, as getting to the green is the easiest part of the sport, IMO.

I am not a great putter, but a few weeks ago at Thanksgiving I made a ridiculous putt with a ton of break. My and FN Phat were playing our dads. Just as I strike my putt FN Phat utters, "There is no way that putt will break that much."

                            Bottom of the cup baby.

This is my favorite putting game with someone else:

                            Seven/Eleven

This is a two-part game, where the first to eleven wins. There is one set of rules for getting to seven, another for getting to eleven.

                            * Flip a tee to determine starting order.
                            * Leadoff player picks a hole and a starting position.
                            * From zero to seven, you can score on sinks and closest to the hole::
o Score +1 for closest to the hole
                            o Score +2 for a sink
                            o Score -1 for a three putt
o You have to get to seven points exactly. If you go over, you start over (from zero).
o Player who was closest to the hole (or was the last one to sink) has the honors for the next hole.
                            * From seven to eleven, you only score on sinks:
                            o Score -1 for a three putt.
o Score +1 for a sink--even if you have less than seven as a result of three-putting.
o If you are closest to the hole:
                            + You get no points.
                            + Neither does anyone else
+ You have the honors for the next hole.

                            Strategy Notes:

                            * When your opponent is at 6, putt from close in. To get to 7, they have to putt closer without sinking.
                            * When your opponent is playing sinks, putt from farther away, because three putts are costlier.
This was a favorite game of the Stanford golf team when Tiger was there. Lots of money won and lost playing this game.
