I'm wondering if it was always as simple as figuring out that I need that kind of grip, or if I'm just taking a bit of a short cut that might hurt me in the long run. Any ideas? What sorts of grips do you all use?
    It depends.

My swing is naturally a bit outside-in, so I hit a soft fade. I use a normal grip if the hole is straight or doglegs left. On a dogleg right, I'll use a bit stronger grip to close the face of the club so the ball won't drift as much to the right.

Sleepy Ridge, Riverside CC, and The Ranches so far. I am playing Wasatch (Mountain Course) on Saturday morning.

First two rounds of the week were solid, today at the Ranches it was unreal. That course is playing so hard right now if you miss the fairway the rough is US OPen length, also it is links style with every hole lined with 4 foot weeds and fescue. You have to be very straight on that course and I am not. It was a long day today, however my putter was as good as it has ever been. I rolled in 4 putts of 20 longer then 20 feet. I had a 60-70 footer shadow the cup, and I had another 40 footer hit dead center and not go down. It was unreal I bet I only had 25 putts on 18 holes today. I have never putted like that before. To bad it took me 7 shots a hole to reach the green.
I don't like the Mountain Course. Good Luck.

I am playing Willow Creek tomorrow. Don't know Sat. yet. Hopefully Jeremy Ranch.

      • I take my first lesson tomorrow.

The teacher is a female, so we will see how it goes.

Not that there is anything wrong with that, I just tend to not speak my mind as freely around the ladies as I do the fellas.

I told my dad today that someday I want to take lessons. I have probably spent thousands (Who am I kidding? Dad always picks up the tab) in self taught lessons on the range and course over the years to only shoot 102. I bet a few hundred bucks with a club pro or coach would do me a world of good.

Same smell. I was joking with my daughter when I got home that she could have learned some new words from Papa (my dad) on the course that day. She already picked up saying stupid when she gets frustrated from her grandpa.

                      • I'm addicted to the show "Playing Lessons From the Pros" on the Golf Channel. Two points that always seem to come out when they talk about how amateur players can improve:

                        1) Spend a lot more time practicing your short game. Everyone wants to hit the driving range, but you'll shave a lot more strokes off your game if you can chip and putt consistently.

                        2) Tempo. Most amateurs are too quick and overswing. Take a smooth, easy swing and let the club do all the work.

I watch this as well as the Golf Fix. Both are great shows and I agree short game and tempo are very important.

                            • Really enjoyed the lesson.

Here is what we learned today:

                              1. My "swing plane" is shit. She helped me out on it and after a few minutes it didn't feel like I was humping a football.

                              2. My grip is so stiff that I could choke water. It appears that I have a death grip on the club and I actually "think" I am helping the club but I am actually keeping it from doing its job.

We worked on both of those and my irons were really moving.

The same crap applied to my driver, and I was actually hitting it about 225. Which is 225 yards farther than before.

                              Next lesson in two weeks.

I was at the driving range once and next to me was a couple. He was helping her with her swing and said, "You're holding the club too tight. You need to hold it loose. Kind of like when you're giving a hand-job."
