I've been meaning to write something but just never got around to it. I took my sons and invited by best friend from high school on a golf trip this summer. Three days in Monterey with Spanish Bay, Spyglass Hill and Pebble Beach on the agenda. First day was Spanish and it was really nice, several holes along the ocean and just a pretty course. My only compliant would be that the individual holes don't really stand out, at the end of the round it was hard to really remember what each hole was like. The second day was Spyglass and I wasn't ready for how much i really enjoyed this course. People call the first five the best start in golf and it they were great and really the rest of the course held up also. Deer are on the course, the holes are apart from each other and it's just peaceful. It was also the hardest course I've ever played, Wolfcreek in Mesquite was hard but that's because it's tricked up, everything at Spyglass was right in front of you and it was hard. The first hole par 5 was downhill, the par 3's were mostly down hill and every par 4 felt like it was uphill. I under clubbed all day. I shot a million but it was a great day and this is the course I want to go back and play again. We ended the day with Pebble, after watching this course on TV for many years it was a big thrill to finally play it. Opening four holes are nice but not to hard, holes 5 through 10 are as good as golf gets. I would stand there, look around, and try and take it all in. The rest of the course was excellent also. Once again I didn't play great but I did par 18. Crazy expensive but well worth it if you get the chance.

Some friends and myself are talking about doing Oregon next summer. I’d really like to hear what worked or what you would do different. At my age it’s proving to be a little difficult to find guys that can walk a course.

Sounds like the trip of a lifetime. You know it's good when you willfully pay $$$ and play so-so but still revere the experience. Next summer let me know - I'd like to play at least once with you.

I think the best golf hole in the world is #8 at Pebble. You need a good drive -then the second shot over the cove into a bunker protected green. You just stand there in wonder at such a beautiful place and marvel at the shot you have to hit. And then you have nine and ten.

I'd love to hit a bucket of balls from the fairway on #8. I agree, I think that's the best hole anywhere. I hit my hybrid off the tee not knowing how far you can go there, it left me with a five iron that I missed high and left. I hit a good chip but it ran far away from the hole, bogey.

who has a simulator setup? i've got a monthly membership to a place with a trackman, and it seems like easy to replicate for $20-$30k if one was so inclined.

This whole Phil Mickelson thing is interesting - it's like finding out your friend had friends that killed people - and befriended them anyway because it was a profitable friendship. He totally nuked any chance he had of sitting in the tower and undermining his former tourmates with spurious comments. I'm just as saddened at this - as I was about finding Tiger was a drug addicted sexaholic.

With everything he has earned and been given because of the Tour it sure seemed petty. I think there will be some adjustments, Pat Perez had some good ideas like giving the top 125 $250,000 at the start of the year so everyone had enough money to play the tour that year. Seems like a pretty good gig, 20 to 25 weeks a year of playing the best golf courses in places like Monterey, Hilton Head, Scottsdale, Tampa, Maui, etc and making millions doing it.

I asked if he had gone to BYU, to which he replied, 'Yes, I graduated in 1990." "Oh, so you were there during the Ty Detmer era," I commented. "Yes, I played with Ty." Very surprised, I asked his last name. "Salido."

"Dude, the Miami game!!!!", was my enthusiastic reply. I told him I remembered very clearly him catching what would be the winning TD after Ty avoid getting creamed by Miami's two defensive tackles (including the pretty-good Russell Maryland). So we talked a fair amount of football while I was getting whupped by my opponent (I had made it to the Sweet Sixteen in the club tournament, but today was not to be). Still, some great conversation and memories more than offset my loss. Here's the play, one of the greatest in BYU history, for those desiring a fine trip down memory lane:

Great story, PAC!

The Miami game was my first time in Cougar stadium. I was 4-5 rows up sitting with a girl from the track team, my brother set me up with. She was out of league, but we stayed friends through school. I had never experienced anything like that environment before, and only a handful of times since. One of the top 3 moments of my BYU fandom.

Also my first game. I was a freshman in the tuba section of the band and I got lucky enough to be in the front row right behind where Salcido caught it. As I was reading your reminder of which play he was famous for the vision of Ty ducking and the two defenders colliding flashed into my head. Such great memories.

I am sure I have shared this before, but in my six years attending BYU, I missed a grand total of ONE home football game, and it was the Miami game. 30 years later, and I still feel a pretty large amount of anger at my buddy whose fault it was. Not only did I, due to him, not attend the game, but also, due to him, I listened to the second half on the radio instead of watching it on TV.

I am literally more angry than I have been in weeks as I type this. If I ever reach the point in my life that I truly forgive him for this, I will feel good about my spiritual progress. But, spoiler alert, it isn't going to happen.
