Edit: for you younger guys... gets your kids playing golf, they'll enjoy it their whole life and every once in a while when they're adults, you get to hug your sons, and tell them you love them for 4 hours on a golf course.

The one on one I've had with my sons on the golf course is the best. I guess you could get the same one on one hunting but with golf you don't have to drag some dead animal out of the mountains.

I have totally lost my game. Just about 3 weeks ago I was playing as well as I had ever played, now it feels like I have never held a golf club before. I know it is all mental, I am thinking I might need a brain transplant to get better.

Parenting 101. - Money talks.

Tell them you'll give them $5 if they get a legit par, and $50 for the first time they beat you on 9 holes, and take them out. Par being out of reach will drive them crazy and keep them coming back. By the time they make a par, tell them that you'll give them $10 if they make two pars in a row. 20 years from now it will be the best money you ever spent.

Post thoughts edit: I remember playing at the old Cascade golf course, and never breaking 40. It was driving me crazy. I must have shot 40 about 10 times. One day I went with my Dad and I shot a 37 and from then I had to golf everyday in the summer.

I have only dealt with 3 sons so it isn't like I have a wealth of knowledge on the subject. My view would be to start them young. My boys were going with me and hitting some balls at times from the time they were 8 years old. Not real often, but on occasion. Same for actually letting them play a round when they hit 11-12. Also all of these boys are very sports oriented. There are times I wish they had been more academic oriented, but they are who they are.

If a kid gets into his teens or adulthood, my guess is they would have to develop a desire to play on their own.

Just take them out and let them beat it around. Don't try and throw too much at them, also I think some kids just love it and others may never want to play. My oldest loved it right from the start and I tried with my youngest but he didn't really want to play until he came home from his mission.

I may be the only guy on this board who hunts but doesn't golf. This why you spend most of your time hunting upland game. No heavy animals to drag out and having a dog with you only adds to the bonding experience. This post is not meant to belittle the golfing experience (in my younger days - prior to children - I was an avid golfer) rather just to clarify and chime in about how hunting with your children can be about as good as it gets in terms of bonding.

The best 17 holes that I've probably ever played, take out an 11 on the par 5 9th and I would have been feeling great. 47-44. I hope that the things I think I have figured out are really figured out.

I truly hate golf

3 of my last 4 rounds I have shot an 80. I can't crack the 70s to save my life.

My last round I was +4 going in to 14 at Cedar Hills which is a 330 yard up hill par 4 with OB on the left and a mountain on the right. If I were smart I would have hit an iron off the tee, instead I was feeling good and thought I could drive the green (wind at our back). I yanked my tee shot OB, tee it up again and put my 2nd shot off the mountain. I tried to chip off the mountain and long story short I end up with a 7. The next hole is a 185 yard par 3 with the wind in our face, again I hit a poor shot off the tee and end up with a double. From 3 over to 9 over. I par 16 and birdie 17 giving me a chance if I can birdie a pretty easy par 5 on hole 18 to shoot that elusive 79.

Hole 18 is fairly short as well about 490 yards from the tips, however straight off the tee about 265 yards is water, you have OB to the left, and trouble right, pretty narrow landing area. I hit a bomb off the tee. Unfortunately it was dead straight and ends up in the water. I drop at the edge of the water and have about 200 to the pin if I go straight over the water, I pull out my 5 iron and hit a perfect shot landing it about 15 feet away for a chance at birdie. I never really gave the putt a chance, end with a par and another 80.

3 courses (talons cove, the ranches and cedar hills) 3 scores of 80 on the nose.

And just as I'm about to take a break from golf, friend has free 18 at Homestead on Saturday, and I shoot a 91 with enough good shots to have a very enjoyable time. Now i'm trying to find time to get out this afternoon.

Such a fickle mistress. I shot an 83 on Saturday morning, and left three (!) putts just an inch short of the cup. Could easily have been an 80. Feeling good about my game, and on my way back home, I get a call from a friend with a connection at a really, really nice course--free round on his client if I can make it that afternoon. I go home and do the necessary groveling to get clearance (the round was technically free, but I have a feeling I'll be paying this one off, with interest, for some time). I barely miss both of the first two greens and end up in nasty bunkers: two double bogeys to open the round. I bogey the next hole and then suddenly can't make clean contact. Drives are either slicing or hooking, irons are all over the place--fat, thin, shanks, yips--and I can't chip or putt to save my life. I card a 99, losing straight up to my buddy for the first time ever. Easily my worst score in the past 10 years.
