I had my first pain-free run since my half in late October! It was only about 3.25 miles, but it was great to not have the stinging knee pain after a mile and a half. I did feel something that was not the norm prior to the half, but it only lasted momentarily and didn't turn to pain. The plan is to stick with the shorter distances a while before pushing back past 5 miles just to make sure things are in order.

Reached 1000 miles for the year last night (I actually probably reached it a couple of days before, but if it's not on your Garmin it doesn't count, right?). That was my goal to start the year, and considering my low mileage months in July, August and September, I'm quite proud of the effort.Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

That is cool. I ran around my block last night. First time out since bone spur surgery 3 weeks ago. Took it nice and easy, and all felt good. May try and see if I can do it again tonight. Have to start building up to a RAGNAR in April.Originally posted by nikuman View PostReached 1000 miles for the year last night (I actually probably reached it a couple of days before, but if it's not on your Garmin it doesn't count, right?). Congrats! That's cool. Maybe I'll set a goal like that (only much reduced) in 2012.Originally posted by nikuman View PostReached 1000 miles for the year last night (I actually probably reached it a couple of days before, but if it's not on your Garmin it doesn't count, right?). I'm back in the saddle again!
I took a lunchtime run today of 1/2 mile. I know I told myself 6 months off but I couldn't do it. This week marks 3 months off and I've decided that is enough time (actually the same time I took for the first fracture). The 1/2 mile felt great but the new shoes will take some getting used to. My heel was hurting a bit after the run and the balls of my feet are a bit tired right now.
The Nike Frees are great though. Hitting a midfoot strike was not difficult at all, and more natural than a heel strike. I kept it slow (9 min/mile pace) and figure I'll do that while I slowly build up. Here's to possibly getting in a race or two this fall!"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. My walking really has been noticed.
My ward boundries were recently realigned and yesterday at my daughters laurels pres mgt he new advisor, who is the new part of the ward, told her "I know who your dad is now - he is the one who is always walking with the little dog. Just how far does he walk anyway, I see him everywhere."
On the same note, I changed my routes a little bit and no longer walk by one of my home teachees home. Yesterday she asked me if I was still walking, 'cause she never saw my walking by her house anymore.
I may be small, but I'm slow.

Yowza! My quads hurt this morning (not a bad hurt but more of a "you used us a lot yesterday hurt") and I can really feel the arches in my foot. Hopefully this is a good sign that the muscles in my foot/legs are absorbing more of the impact instead of relying on my tibia."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. Glad you can start running again. I am in the same boat. But I am not sure if after running a 1/2 mile if you should be sore at all if you are doing it right. Of course if you are changing your whole mechanics that could do it.Originally posted by Moliere View PostThanks!

I did 1.5 last night in my Kinervas. Looking forward to 2 on wednesday.

It's not a bad hurt. My "yowza" probably was too much. It's a bit of an ache but in reality I haven't ran in over 3 months and I also did 20 minutes or so on the bike on top of adjusting my mechanics on teh run. It's just telling me that I'm likely using my muscles a bit more to help take some of the shock, whcih I think is good.Originally posted by BigPiney View PostGlad you can start running again. I'm excited because starting on New Year's Eve I ran 4 times over 9 days which is more than I'd run in two months since my half and it was all with zero pain. I decided after Saturday's run to lay off a little and to not go too much, too soon but plan to head out again in a few hours.
The other change in going back to my routine is that I've taken the neighbor's dog out a couple of times with me. They got a young border collie mix from the pound a few months back and she doesn't get nearly the exercise she needs so I offered to take her out. She loves me now, but it's not an easy run with her. I get a good upper body workout trying to temper her and it's killing my efforts to improve my gait, but at least she isn't too interested in the other dogs or the deer we see while out. She wants to be my speed training and she likes to run in the middle of the path which is annoying and difficult for a right-hander.
Any tips for teaching a dog to run well with you would be appreciated.I have nothing else to say at this time.

I also got my first pair of running tights for Christmas and I LOVE those things. I love the Ned Flanders "Feels like nothing at all!" feeling and the warmth they provide is amazing.
Niku, have you switched up shoes lately? I thought something I'd read made it sound like you have changed models or brand from what you were wearing regularly a year ago?
My wife has a couple pair of Brooks Ghost GTX and those are nice. I'm not in a neutral yet but I'd really like to get something with some decent water protection.I have nothing else to say at this time.

After making fun of them the past few years, I bought my first pair of Five Fingers, choosing to go with the Bikilas. I ran 3 miles in them on the first day and liked them, but it's going to be a proces I can tell. I think the Nike Frees have been excellent preparation, but there is a tremendous difference between the two. I can see why purists don't like to call the Frees a true minimalist shoe as you really feel everything in the five fingers. It's not painful, but even little rocks make their presence known. Looking forward to upping the mileage.
