I wasn't going to about it...

Some things that come over the pulpit and in the Ensign are just council. And I believe most of that to be well intenteded, but far from Commandment.

If I get a tattoo of the CTR shield on one of my calfs (which I am going to do) I don't think God really cares one way or the other.

Your whole statement of "this is how it is whether you agree with it or not" can be a tad bit off-puting which is not what I think you intended.

As long as she is a good girl in every other respect, I think I am going to encourage my daughter to get her ears double pierced to help her avoid the kind of guys that are too hung up on that type of thing.

Conversation I had with my Stake President (100% true without hyperbole).

AV: "I'm going to encourage my daughter to date anyone but Mormon boys"

        SP: "Why"

AV: "I know what kinds of problems and thoughts every Priest I have ever visited has, but I can be blissfully ignorant how kids from other faiths think"

SP: "Sounds like a good idea, let me know how it works out"

I was thinking of doing the same, but not until I get calf implants.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I know you didn't want to fight about the polygamy/priesthood issue, it's just something I don't really want to go into, and I don't think it would really relate anyway. Just because I'd probably say something completely unorthodox about it that would open up a whole different can of worms.

I don't think I said that ever. I have an opinion on it and I think I'm right. You may have a differing opinion that you think is right. We both think the other person is in error. I didn't mean to express it so forcefully, though I do tend to do that sometimes.

By the way, wife's doing something else tonight, so I'm on my own. I think I'll rent Death Proof after the Tarantino discussion. It's the only one I haven't seen. I do plan to repent someday for it, just not yet.

I'm actually using some of this stuff for my lesson for the young men this weekend. I might have to print off the Erin Andrews picture as an object lesson.

So you're implying that you have all kinds of LDS teenage boys coming in and confessing to you and feeling guilty about normal sexuality? Hopefully you just reassure them that masturbation can become a bad habit, but is not really that big of a deal. And that sexual thoughts are totally normal and unavoidable.

All the unnecessary guilt and suffering these boys go through -- going in and telling the Bishop about their masturbation, etc. It just strikes me as psychologically unhealthy and pointless.

What has happened to this thread? Can I remind everyone that we are supposed to be talking about breasts here? Let's stay on topic.

I may or may not be doing what I should when talking to these boys, but I rarely ask if they are or aren't masturbating. I have had several that do feel guilty and bring it up of their own accord. I then try and focus on what they are feeling and thinking is perfectly natural and normal. Controlling our physical body is a life long challenge. We all have impulses and desires, yet how we choose to deal with them is what is most important.

I do talk to every single boy about pornography. I have sent 10 missionaries into the field - 6 of them had what I would classify as a serious pornography addiction(daily viewing), 3 of them a reoccurring problem (will view daily for 1-2 weeks, then go weeks before viewing again) and 1 of them had somehow avoided the temptation all together. This is what I was referring to when I made the joke to my SP.

Wow, 6/10. I wonder if this is typical. If so, could anything 60% of teenagers do be considered a serious addiction?

                        • What is the purpose behind each commandment? When the prophet says ___, do you ever ponder why he say that? What the purpose was? What his intent was?

Unyielding obedience is not a bad thing, but since we the pre-mortal intelligences have been sent here to learn and progress, doesn't it follow that we should strive to gain a better understanding of why God said ____ and the prophet said ____, rather than mindlessly and blindly following a list of do's and don'ts?

Here's a scenario: you have a power outage on Saturday night and all of your baby's milk spoils. Do you make her starve to death out of fear of shopping on the sabbath?

Of course not. I go to the Marshs down the street they always have the best milk.

Is this a question for me? If so, I agree, and I've already thrown out four scenarios to take personal revelation over the commandment/rule that were all less severe or obvious than your example.
