On the matter of piercings.
I spoke with a general authority a few hours ago and encouraged him to grow a ponytail and get a pierced ear. In fact, I offered him a dollar if he would do it. He said his soul was worth more than a dollar. I offered him two. He didn't respond. I think he is considering it.τὸν ἥλιον ἀνατέλλοντα πλείονες ἢ δυόμενον προσκυνοῦσιν

So a pony tail and ear ring on a man equals the loss of one's soul? Thank goodness for male pattern baldness!Originally posted by All-American View PostOn the matter of piercings.

I know this thread is from way back, but I had this discussion over the weekend and came here to see what this forum thought. I personally think JR Holland's talk, "To Young Women" speaks out about implants plainly.Originally posted by SoonerCoug View PostWhy has the Church spoken out against tattoos and extra earrings but not against breast implants? It seems to me that all of these things are just attempts to decorate or beautify the body.

"In terms of preoccupation with self and a fixation on the physical, this is more than social insanity; it is spiritually destructive, and it accounts for much of the unhappiness women, including young women, face in the modern world. And if adults are preoccupied with appearance—tucking and nipping and implanting and remodeling everything that can be remodeled—those pressures and anxieties will certainly seep through to children. At some point the problem becomes what the Book of Mormon called “vain imaginations.”"
Aside from the onset of breast cancer or some recon. surgery necessary due to injury, I can't come up with a reason for a woman to get implants that doesn't ultimately come down to vanity at some level. Anyway, just my thoughts, I think I'm in the minority as I haven't found many that agree with me that this talk addresses the subject plainly.

"preoccupation" and "fixation" are key words in my mind. If someone wants to enhance their appearance I think that's great. I appreciate that my wife stays fit and spends time on her wardrobe and appearance. I try to reciprocate. Now if she wanted a dozen different procedures on every part of her body & face I'd be concerned. But if she wants her prechildren body back, and add a procedure here and there to enhance her beauty, I'd be supportive.Originally posted by LA Coug View PostI know this thread is from way back, but I had this discussion over the weekend and came here to see what this forum thought. I think it addresses the subject, but I'm not seeing the plainness you're getting at. Yes, implants come down to vanity. So do braces, hair dye, curlers, lipstick, etc. The operative word in the passage you quote is "preoccupied".Originally posted by LA Coug View PostI know this thread is from way back, but I had this discussion over the weekend and came here to see what this forum thought. Should grown women be preoccupied over their appearance? No. Should young women? No. This is very plain from Elder Holland and I agree with him.
Is a woman that has nursed 5 or 8 or 10 kids, who is left with two saggy "rock in a sock" pancakes of skin where she used to have breasts, who just wants to feel like a women again, is that woman "preoccupied" over her appearance again if she gets implants? Well, that's a much more difficult question to answer and not so clearly addressed in Elder Holland's talk.
Is a woman who birthed 5 or 8 or 10 kids, who lost 50 or 100+ pounds more of post-child-bearing weight and is left with an enormous panniculus - should she now carry that panniculus around for the rest of her life, like some metaphorical cross to bear, because to do otherwise would mean she's "preoccupied" with her appearance and is succumbing to vanity? Again, a tough question and not so clearly addressed in Elder Holland's talk.
I'm not attacking you LA, I'm just saying I don't see it quite as clearly addressed as you do.
Cheers,
BFM

After reading this I think we should start a fund raiser so every woman that has had a bunch of kids can get it done.Originally posted by BigFatMeanie View PostIs a woman that has nursed 5 or 8 or 10 kids, who is left with two saggy "rock in a sock" pancakes of skin where she used to have breasts, who just wants to feel like a women again, is that woman "preoccupied" over her appearance again if she gets implants?
