Wow, 6/10. I wonder if this is typical. If so, could anything 60% of teenagers do be considered a serious addiction?

I totally agree. I tend to think that sexual activity, including masturbation, is one of the natural ways that humans process stress. Stress is a killer. It ages people, makes them susceptible to all kinds of illness and disease, and it contributes to poor psychological well being. Sex is good for people, whether they are married or not. Sex and masturbation contribute to one's health.

This was an actual conversation my wife had with her friend. Here is what I posted on CB last June:

My wife recently visiting with a friend whose husband is a bishop. According to my wife this good sister (and she is a very good person) was quoted as saying, "I really want to get it done, but I need to wait until *** is released. The bishop's wife can't just walk into sacrament with a new set of boobs"

So basically she wants them, I know they can easily afford them, but she doesn't feel it would be appropriate because of her husband's calling.

This doesn't add anything to the discussion, but it cracks me up so I thought I would share.

So how much longer does your wife have to wait? I'll bet you can't wait either!

I may or may not be doing what I should when talking to these boys, but I rarely ask if they are or aren't masturbating. I have had several that do feel guilty and bring it up of their own accord. I then try and focus on what they are feeling and thinking is perfectly natural and normal. Controlling our physical body is a life long challenge. We all have impulses and desires, yet how we choose to deal with them is what is most important.

I do talk to every single boy about pornography. I have sent 10 missionaries into the field - 6 of them had what I would classify as a serious pornography addiction(daily viewing), 3 of them a reoccurring problem (will view daily for 1-2 weeks, then go weeks before viewing again) and 1 of them had somehow avoided the temptation all together. This is what I was referring to when I made the joke to my SP.

I doubt everyone here will believe this, but the person who told it to me had no reason to lie to me... He said that he would regularily masturbate during his tenure as LDS bishop (he was a bishop in his early 40s). He didn't say anything about porn, and I didn't ask what regularily meant.

My test for commandment vs. counsel - are there worthiness questions directly tied to it?

For wearing the garment? - yes, that's a commandment (you're asked in the temple recommend interview if you wear it as directed).

For tattoos, piercings and earrings? No, it's not a commandment, it's counsel (no one is excluded from temple attendance because he/she has a tattoo or a body piercing or multiple earrings).

And I saw the talk in which GBH talked abotu tattoos and piercings. It was given as grandfatherly advice to the youth, not as a new commandment for the saints.

I was in the YM presidency in our ward at the time, and thought it was humorous how others in YM/YW took what I clearly saw as advice. Telling boys they weren't going to be able to go on missions if they had tattoos or earrings, etc. Sorry, but that's simply not the case, never has been, and likely never will be.

And that fact pretty much makes is fall into the area of advice, not commandment...

And no, I don't have any tattoos or piercings. My wife has one set of modest earrings. My teenage sons have neither tattoos or earrings. And I personally think both tats and earrrings are pretty stupid and generally a sign that someone is a follower rather than a leader. But I still don't think there's an actual commandment against them.

Just as a blessing without a law isn't really a blessing, a commandment without a worthiness penalty isn't really a commandment...

I have no reason to disbelieve it (is that considered a double negative?). I'm more intrigued by the fact that your conversations with your friends seem to be much different than mine.

They would never be prophetic counsel. That's a different category. Prophetic counsel/commandments is what the prophet is telling you to do. Doctrine is truth about God. And I wouldn't know how to answer that question. My answer probably would be that the prophets taught them as doctrine, and that GBH overstated the case on that one.

If he tells you to eat roast beef over the pulpit at GC, then it is a commandment. And if you eat roast beef it is a sin. That's assuming you believe TSM is a prophet of God.

I hate posting responses like this, but can you point me to your source? (Specifically, a talk given by a GA). Just trying to weed out opinions (fully aware that a talk given by a GA is pretty much still an opinion).

Funny, because I recently found the source of the multiple earrings nonsense. We have GBH's "Way to Be" book on the back of the commode. I had some "time" on my hands :flush:, so well... I picked it up. In chapter four he mentions...

"As for young women, they do not need to drape rings up and down their ears. One pair of earrings is actually more beautiful than an array of metal that almost always detracts from the natural beauty of the face and hair".
