I think (could be wrong) that he was trying to convey that there's a spectrum of results. Also that there's a distinction between "not successful" and "house is on fire level catastrophic failure in which wife commited adultry with RS President." (That actually happened in one of my last wards).

Fortunately or unfortunately, depends on the situation, church leadership is not monolothic. If the apostle meeting with Archuletta was Christofferson or Gong, I doubt they'd have said that. If it was Ballard or Holland or Bedar, I could easily see it. Difference being young/smart or old/dumb on this issue (age doesn't always correlate 100% to dumbness on current issues but enough to make a big difference). This is another data point supporting my biggest point of advocacy right now for change in the church. Retirement age for apostles. If we retired apostles/prophets at say age 80 maybe even 85, this would be a completely different church.Originally posted by LVAllen View PostFrom the stupidly rebranded Mormonsandgays.lds.org website (now https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/topics/gay)
"We don’t counsel people that heterosexual marriage is a panacea. You’ll see in some of these experiences that are related on this site that it has been a successful experience in a few cases, or some have expressed the success they have found in marriage and in raising a family, and in the joy and all that has filled out and blessed their lives as a consequence. But that we know is not always true. And it’s not always successful. Sometimes it’s been even disastrous. We think it’s something that a person can evaluate, and they can discuss, and both with priesthood leaders and family and others, and make decisions. But we simply don’t take a uniform position on saying, ‘Yes, always,’ or ‘No, always.’” —Elder D. Todd Christofferson
I thought something to the effect of "don't counsel the SSA member to enter into a heterosexual marriage as a way to cure teh gay" was in the General Handbook at one time, but I'm not finding it in it's current iteration.Last edited by jay santos; 11-19-2022, 10:35 AM.

I am skeptical that the conversation was as hamfisted as he is making it out to be. Of course, we will never know."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

Then you see that horrible quote they put out there for public consumption and I don't understand why you are skeptical.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostI am skeptical that the conversation was as hamfisted as he is making it out to be. oh dear. one of my first thoughts when i heard about that shooting, was "please let the perp not be mormon" in the same way when there is police brutality i think "please don't be white on black"Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostColorado Springs shooter is rumored to be Mormon or from a Mormon family.I'm like LeBron James.

The shooter's mother was apparently in charge of the ward bulletin and posted multiple times on an LDS women's FB page about her very troubled son. She also has.a certificate from the Texas Alcohol Beverage Association, although for what reason is unclear...

Hard to stop stuff like this. The issues are all very complicated. It sounds like a case where he shouldn't have had access to a gun.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostThe shooter's mother was apparently in charge of the ward bulletin and posted multiple times on an LDS women's FB page about her very troubled son. I question the validity of someone's MENSA membership when they also put Ward Bulletin Specialist on their LinkedIn.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostThe shooter's mother was apparently in charge of the ward bulletin and posted multiple times on an LDS women's FB page about her very troubled son. It’s not a good look when juxtaposed against the “musket fire” line. I’m not saying the two are related but they don’t have to be to look bad.Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostColorado Springs shooter is rumored to be Mormon or from a Mormon family."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. whether related or not (and they are likely not related) there simply isn't any reason for a q12 to use that kind of terminology in that context. crazy people hear what they want to hear and it seems to me that it would be best to scratch that from the final draft.Originally posted by Moliere View Post

Easy to say with the benefit of hindsight.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View Post

I don't think hindsight is needed in thinking that line was a bad look. It isn't like there weren't previously shootings like this at gay clubs.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post
