"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I almost posted during Cook's talk (I think) saying that gay temple marriage appeared to be right around the corner based on this conference.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostSheesh. I suppose you could label this the anti-gay marriage conference. Show sympathy for gay marriage and you will answer to Jesus at judgment day.
Wonder why so many addressed it? I don't recall that much focus even at the height of the Prop 8 battle. Anyone else get that vibe?

That's because you are in the majority here.Originally posted by Non Sequitur View PostI see very little tearing down of other people's beliefs. Yeah, there's bitching and moaning, but most people are respectful of what others believe and hold sacred. No one's perfect, and sometimes people get in a mood, but overall I think people here do a good job of being civil.

I enjoyed President Uchtdorf's talk on Saturday afternoon. I can't think of a GA who has been as candid about those issues in a long, long time and I feel like he gave people like me some currency. I also feel like he is genuinely trying to reform Church culture.
However, I can only hope that local leadership will take his message to heart. We all trust our own unorthodoxies.

Why is that funny?Originally posted by The_Douger View PostIt seemed like several of them mentioned it. Basically said "They're going to pass this as a law, but it's not right, and never will be."
It's funny to me that they say that, but have the gaysandmormons.org site as well. SOmetimes they seem friendlier to the gay community than others.
They also seemed to talk a lot about home teaching as well.

I felt like the clear highlight of the conference was President Uchtdorf. It's sad that he was put in one of the least watched time slots. His sermon should have been given a prime-time spot on Sunday Morning when the highest number of viewers is watching.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostSheesh. I felt like there was a watershed moment with his talk, then a whole lot of retrenchment and straining at gnats the rest of the conference.

While I liked Uchtdorf's talk quite a bit, I think most local leaders will internalize only three words from that talk: "Doubt your doubts." I find this extremely unfortunate and reductionist, but that seems to be the take away for most active, faithful, non questioning Mormons.Originally posted by Sleeping in EQ View PostI enjoyed President Uchtdorf's talk on Saturday afternoon. Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

I agree. People here have been very derogatory with me about my (un)beliefs.Originally posted by UVACoug View PostThen you aren't paying attention much ... because there are plenty of people slamming other's beliefs here. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Several talks affected me in a very postive way. The others were just talks for me. However, those talks may have be positive for others. I enjoy conference and even DVD'd the second session Sunday because I had another commitment.
That session was the first one I can remember finishing about 10 minutes early. Is my memory just bad?

Priesthood session finished about that early the night before. Also, I remember a priesthood session back in 2003 where President Hinckley got up as the final speaker and said something like "let's end this a little early--there's a football game to watch". BYU was playing SDSU that night, IIRC. I remember Beck fumbling the ball on the first possession, and If memory serves, that was the game where he broke his hand/wrist.Originally posted by byu71 View PostSeveral talks affected me in a very postive way. There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

I mentioned this earlier in the thread. I think it's notable a woman gave the opening prayer in Sunday morning's session. Customarily, women are only allowed to give the closing prayers in Sacrament meeting, with the conventional wisdom that the opening prayer requires the priesthood. So I think this is another notable barrier breaking for LDS equality movement.
