  • Vinson. Nice job. Conservative Candy cane. I'm digging that tie a lot. (Not a fan of the collars though)

GAs get freshness points for straying from the drab red tie.

Vinson even went pinstripe out of the closet. My guess is that one of the apostles will pull him aside later and set him straight.

    • Jr. just asked if this was the accent portion of conference. I told him yes, they try to keep all the accents together so people can tune out for a while.

I bet the OW people sent that fly in to distract.

                • Sheesh. I suppose you could label this the anti-gay marriage conference. Show sympathy for gay marriage and you will answer to Jesus at judgment day.

Wonder why so many addressed it? I don't recall that much focus even at the height of the Prop 8 battle. Anyone else get that vibe?

Yeah. That and talking about women/priesthood. ( I only watched the last session and priesthood)

It seemed like several of them mentioned it. Basically said "They're going to pass this as a law, but it's not right, and never will be."

It's funny to me that they say that, but have the gaysandmormons.org site as well. SOmetimes they seem friendlier to the gay community than others.

They also seemed to talk a lot about home teaching as well.

I have had a long journey spiritually and mentally over the last 15+ years. What I have experienced closely resembles the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. While not always in that order, and not to the same finality. There are multiple story lines in my experience and they all are at different stages if the progression, and sometimes they take a detour and go backwards through the stages as well.

In many ways, the transition between denial and anger is the toughest one. It is where attaching blame happens and where hate is a common word used. While I was angry, I hated many different things/people at various times: I hated the church culture, the leadership, the founders; you name it, I could find a reason to hate it. But what I hated most was the feeling that I was deliberately being deceived. But as I evolved, I found that most of the hate was because I viewed every action through the prism of feeling deceived. I would interpret any action by others(past or present) as motivated by that person as an attempt to deceive others/cover up the truth.

Over time, I started to realize what I was doing. I was putting thoughts in others head and interpreting actions based on my personal reaction to those actions. What I needed to realized was that my views of the church didn't need to be tied to what I thought was the motivation of the leaders/members. For example, many believe that Joesph Smith is intentionally lying about his visitations, translations, etc. This interpretation obviously helps with their narrative that the church is not true. I have come to feel that JS truly believed that these events happened, and acted according to this belief. Now, whether they actually happened or not is not addressed here, simply that the motivation of his actions were most likely to further the progression of his own belief in the events, not as an attempt to deceive the masses.

Phipps probably is struggling with the feelings of being deceived, and is interpreting any actions of GBH through that prism. If phipp thinks that GBH's actions were motivated by deception, I could see how he would feel that he was being a shyster, etc. But, I can think of several other motivations that GBH could have had (thinking of the salamander letters specifically) that would have led to his actions.

In short, I can barely interpret my own motivations for certain actions, let alone try to determine the motivations of others. Once I figured this out, my life, my relationship with my wife, my interaction with church and church members became much less confrontational, and ultimately led to a higher level in internal peace.

I just wanted to acknowledge Jarid's above post. It was from his heart and I learned from it.

Especially interesting since Hales noted that they choose their own topics. Seemed like Saturday was a lot less rigid than Sunday. I'd like to know how the order is decided, because I can't see Cook winning many rock, paper, scissors contests.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Hmm, any thoughts as to who that could have been?
