Is the line moving, or is it me?
Women pass the sacrament all the time. Children do too. There's nothing sacred about standing up and passing.

In practice, the deacon's priesthood responsibility seems to be to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to partake.

A rare bit of common sense here. The sacrament is administered by the priests under the keys of the Bishop, and the deacons (and teachers, for that matter) are fulfilling their scriptural obligation to assist. That they assist in their respective ways is both by custom and directive.

I suppose a girl could theoretically just walk up to the table and ask for a tray herself. I encourage one of you Milquetoasters to try it.

          • BY said that both men and women had to honor their priesthood:

            Now, brethren, the man that honors his Priesthood, the woman that honors her Priesthood, will receive an everlasting inheritance in the kingdom of God;
            http://www.yorgalily.org/~yorgasor/c.../JD17-115.html

Of course, we know that BY was, well, clearly wrong when it came to the blacks and the priesthood. Maybe Dieter was referring to BY when he said "there have been times when members or leaders in the church have simply made mistakes. There may have been things said or done that were not in harmony with our values, principles or doctrine."

So is he saying that things like polygamy and the priesthood ban were never truths God declared to be unchangeable? Do we know which truths are unchangeable?

That's an easily refutable statement given that he included "policies". I can think of a half dozen policies that have changed in my lifetime. Everytime they issue a new CHoI they change a couple policies. In fact, they changed the policy against gays back in 2010 that now allows openly gay members to be full members with temple and Priesthood privileges.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

                • I chose to wallow in the flesh pots of Babylon (well, Austin, TX) this past weekend rather than hear the Lord's Anointed. Because, you know, free passes. And I can read the Lord's Anointed's talks and watch them anytime now.

So I haven't gotten the conference lowdown except for what I've gleaned from FB posts. The nearest I can tell is that this happened:

President Uchtdorf: Church leaders have made mistakes in the past.
Elder Oaks: We're not making any now.

Fair enough? I'll have to actually read the talks to see if this summary holds.

So the natural conclusion is that everything the church leaders say now will eventually be proven incorrect. You can now save yourself at least 10 hours of your semi-annual weekends from their anachronistic, bigoted bluster.

Or, the natural conclusion is that everything that church leaders have ever said is true. You can save yourself the trouble of actually thinking about anything that is ever said over the pulpit, or reflecting upon it, or discussing it, or praying about it. Because, when the Lord's Anointed have spoken, the thinking is done.

I don't know how you could possibly come to that conclusion.

Fair warning, Indy. If you want to trade meaningless stereotypes, just remember that you're dealing with a pro.

The conclusion saved me 10 hours of TV viewing last weekend. I got a shit-load of stuff done.
