How do people talk about how wonderful their kids are, or how awesome their recent trip was, or how evil the world is, in just a little over a minute? It takes some of the older people in the ward that much time just walking to the stand."Friendship is the grand fundamental principle of Mormonism" - Joseph Smith Jr.

I wonder how he came up with the number 40? Maybe it has something to do with the number of days Christ fasted in the wilderness. Did the Israelites have to wander in the desert for 40 years?Originally posted by old_gregg View Postour ward needs to average 40 testimonies each f&t meeting to comply with appropriate levels of spirituality. the bishop was the one who said it too.
To question your Bishop's ability to receive revelation for his ward is something I am not trying to do. Just the same it is hard for me to accept quantitative type numbers over quality.

he quoted dho and explained that testimonies should be brief, simple witnesses. he then said "our ward needs 40 or more members to bear testimony every f&t meeting."Originally posted by creekster View PostBYU71 may be on to something here. Stake Conference weekend. Presiding area authority brought up the question of whether you should attend a gay child's same-sex wedding. Answer: Yes. Did not address the question of whether you could beg off from baking their wedding cake due to strongly-held religious beliefs.

I love being Mormon, but dang we are a weird people. My bishop went off on how he saw a teenage girl going to the temple in a dress that came half way up her thigh, and she wasn't even wearing leggings either.Originally posted by old_gregg View Posthe quoted dho and explained that testimonies should be brief, simple witnesses. he then said "our ward needs 40 or more members to bear testimony every f&t meeting."

I was very sick so missed church, but I asked my son how it went when he got home. "Super!" he replied enthusiastically. I wondered if at long last the spirit has touched him, so I asked for details. "We got king sized candy bars in class today!"

How dare she go to the temple holding a recommend that stated her bishop had already interviewed her and found her worthy to enter.Originally posted by Sullyute View PostI love being Mormon, but dang we are a weird people. This is interesting for two reasons. One, that that was the official answer (it seems like a no-brainer now, but it was not so long ago that I don't think you would ever hear that counsel from the pulpit). And two, that he apparently brought it up himself. That is frankly surprising. I could see someone asking during one of those Saturday conference Q&As, but it seems noteworthy to me if he indeed was the one that broached the topic.Originally posted by LVAllen View PostStake Conference weekend. It's hard to imagine that an Area Authority would be freelancing on a matter like that, so maybe the GAs are getting a distinctive message from the powers-that-be.Nothing lasts, but nothing is lost.

It kind of blows my mind that this is even a point of discussion. I can't imagine how I would react if someone told me I couldn't attend the wedding of one of my children.Originally posted by Harry Tic View PostThis is interesting for two reasons. Hmm... It seems that we (i.e. mormons) tell people/parents that all the time.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostIt kind of blows my mind that this is even a point of discussion. Same for me - except for the sick part.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostI was very sick so missed church,
Reminds me of a former Jehovah's Witness lady I met in the mission field. She had been all in JW. My recollection was that they told her she could no longer associate with her "apostate" daughter who was getting married in a Catholic church. This JW mother didn't enter the Catholic church for the wedding ceremony, waiting just outside to be able to be a part of her daughter's special day. Apparently, she got disciplined for not having fully shunned her daughter. That's when she said she called it quits.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostIt kind of blows my mind that this is even a point of discussion.
