I may not be able to frame a lawyerly argument like the good Elder Oaks can, or try to sound as reasonable as Elder Holland, but let me try to help out.

The vast majority of the church's hand-wringing over gay rights encroaching on religious liberties could be solved by following this one weird trick: keep your religious convictions outside of the political arena.

    Thank you.
The newsworthy part: Not a single utterance of "same sex attraction." Huge.

Aw come on, you had to ruin the positive with that?!?
"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

I truly believe some serious dissention in the church is coming, if not already here. Just my opinion, but those who seem to rise to power and are the most vociforous (sp) probably believe in the falling away in the last days. That faithful members will be persecuted for their beliefs.

They see the dissent and falling away as natural and even more proof of their fundamental belief. Those who belong to the church primarily for social reasons are going to struggle with church positions.

Elimination of the honor code at BYU would be an indication I am dead wrong.

Also, the Trib has succumbed to the abominable "take this survey before you can read our copy of someone else's story" trend. Too bad.

I think they called a press conference to state their opposition to pesky "public accommodation" rulings dating back to, oh, the 1950s. Not in so many words, of course. But the sentiment - businesses should be permitted to follow the moral leanings of their owners and deny services to ___ people, which they don't like, even while they provide those services to ___ people, which they do - is the same.

I noticed the same thing. It was no accident he chose his words here:

Such tactics are every bit as wrong as denying access to employment, housing or public services because of race or gender.
Race and gender are both protected classes, while sexual orientation is not. To reference sexual orientation would have elevated their status higher than what they are legally recognized (for the present).

Somewhat related, I sat through a ton of mandatory briefings from the Army this weekend, and one of them was Equal Opportunity. The briefer said that after the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, sexual orientation is now protected from discrimination under EO. Look, he was trying his best, and it was in front on hundreds, so I didn't have the heart to correct him.

I was teaching Elders Quorum and someone told of how young man chose not to go on a mission, went when he retired knocked on some door and saw lady when she was younger. Lady joined the church but said you were supposed to come to me 50 years earlier or something like that.

I heard various versions of this story where you would of joined the church many years earlier if the missionaries that were to teach you went on missions when they were supposed too. Same person talked of how there are people that get numerous invitations to hear the. Gospel but maybe a particular person is supposed to teach them.

Interesting to teach and some Urban Legends come up.

Im just the opposite. I wonder what would have happened if I hadn't joined the church until after college....

Two bye weeks on consecutive Sundays for stake conference this time. First week is a broadcast from SLC, second week a typical SC.

I learned about a couple of books that have been floating around the SL Valley... something about tent cities?

Apparently these books, plus my stake's emphasis on emergency preparedness, is causing anxiety in some members of my ward.

I learned that the facilities rep assigned to our stake, who is also a member of my ward, is a huge douchebag.

The facilities guy in charge of our region is total dick. I think it comes with the territory. Being a facilities guy that is.
