Geek time: Domo Arigato is an informal way of saying "thanks". More commonly Domo or the full Domo Arigato Gozaimasu or the short Arigato. Domo Arigato is the least common of all.

Kansha Shimasu is the distal terminal form of the verb "Kansha Suru" which is itself a noun-irregular, Kansha being the noun for "thanks, gratitude" and suru being the irregular verb for action/doing. Lit. "I do thanks (speaking to person to whom politeness is desired).

    Go with Domo.

    • I can't change the lyrics to the Primerica song but at least I know I'm not entirely off base.

      And Mr. roboto isn't offended.

Kansha shimasu is the formulation (or one of them) commonly used when giving prayers.

          • Reportedly, the division of family services in the church has been told to prepare for a massive growth in the church membership--specifically, 50 million members, right now. They're hiring thousands of counselors as we speak, even non members (if they agree to counsel according to the principles of the church, of course), to be prepared for this influx.

Source: a guy in my ward, who thinks he's probably okay to disclose this.

On a related note, a daughter of a woman in my ward just got her mission call as part of the new initiative. She was told in either her patriarchal blessing or mission call (details are fuzzy here), that she would be transferred from the Taipei mission to mainland China halfway through her mission.

Oh, and 9 of the 10 lost tribes are in khazakstan.

Sunday school was particularly awesome today.

              • I was reminded today how much I appreciate full-time Elders who, when asked to give a talk in Sacrament Meeting, prepare nothing so that they may be led fully by the spirit in their remarks.

                • We had a great talk on the sacrament, well it was great until it veered off into the unwritten rules of sacrament meeting. Thankfully he didn't go too deep into those rules.

At one point he said the bishop should be on the stand 7 minutes before the start of the meeting. I looked at the bishop and he just rolled his eyes. I then caught the bishops eye and looked at him sternly while pointing at him, which made the bishop silently crack up. It was a fun meeting.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Last night my wife got a text from a friend in the ward asking if we had attended the adult session because she had walked out of the stake president's talk and was curious what our thoughts were. True to form, we weren't there but I definitely wanted details.

Apparently his talk was on homosexuality and gay marriage. He was concerned about how acceptible these were becoming, especially among the younger generations "for whatever reasons." This problem has even started to encroach into our own homes. To illustrate this point, the stake president proceeded to read several comments made by members of the stake that he had "come across" on Twitter and Facebook supporting these two "evils." He never identified any of the individuals that he had quoted, but the fact that he has apparently searching out, or has people passing things along to him makes me uncomfortable. As far as I know, one of the quotes was mine. I've certainly made a few.

According to our friend, the whole talk seemed very negative and borderline hateful. It just seems odd to me that despite Salt Lake's softer approach to homosexuality the last year or so towards these topics, that message doesn't seem to be trickling down to the stakes and wards.

Of course the stake president included the line, "unfortunately, those that need to hear this message most, aren't here." Of course. But hopefully he takes comfort knowing that his message is still making it to those of us that he missed.
I got a little clarification on some of the above details. Apparently the Facebook and Twitter comments that were quoted by the stake president were all posted by youth in the stake, not by adults like I had been led to believe. Because that's less creepy.

                    • "Who are the people in the ward that hold priesthood keys?" "Who is the president of the priest quorum?" "Why is there a HP group leader, but no HP president in each ward?"

These are some of the questions the 40ish counselor in the Stake Presidency asked today as he gave a lesson to all the phood holders in my ward. This is a ward in which about 70% of the mel phood is 60+, they are educated, there are former bishops and SPs, and they've been around the block more than a few times. I was embarrassed for the young whippersnapper and his lack of preparation or inability to know his audience.

Yeah. I probably couldn't hear three things this off base in a year in my ward, let alone one Sunday.

We had Elder Nelson speak at our stake conference today. His talk was full of hope and encouragement with a Christ-centered message. The other speakers kept a similar theme and we had a nice uplifting meeting. It sucks that your stake president decided to take a different approach.

                              • I learned that as much as some things change, others never will. I teach the 12-13 year old Sunday School kids. My class is all boys. For some reason, we just don't have any girls that age, but by golly we have 20 boys! The lesson was about being kind to brothers and sisters. I learned that none of the kids in my class are treated fairly at home and that the younger siblings get everything they want. Sounds like when I was a kid. Just cracked me up how all those boys openly admitted they would definitely treat their friends better than their siblings. At least they're following the commandment to not lie.
