You can't ignore a mod. He just ignores you the old-fashioned way."More crazy people to Provo go than to any other town in the state."

Possibly homeless man in my ward (Eugene Oregon) told the teacher that he should let his 11 year old daughter listen to inappropriate music because it gives her the ability to make decisions for herself. He then said when she's a teen, not to tell her what kind she can and cannot take because Tylenol is a drug and just because the government makes ecstasy illegal doesn't mean it isn't as good for you as Tylenol.
Last week, he said "I have what you would call a dirty mouth. Mormons tell me not to curse when I'm around them. I say, who the eff are you? The word police?"
Also, he smells bad.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I learned that a lot of people in the ward work much harder than I do. I attended ward council in place of the EQ's pres, I am the first couselor, and realized how much time and energy are utlilized by my ward's leaders. The bishop, the EQ prez, the RS prez, Primary, etc. are all working a lot of hours to keep on top of all the issues in the ward.
As someone who has never had one of the busier responsibilities I have been blissfully ignorant of the dedication of local leaders.

I learned that a good friend of mine was just called to be the HPGL. I guess I can't share this with anyone until he's sustained (next week?) but I did give him a hearty "Welcome to Ward Council!" when I found out. He wasn't amused, but he'll be good at the calling."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I'm always amazed at how much time/effort people are willing to put in as well.Originally posted by TexTechCoug View PostI learned that a lot of people in the ward work much harder than I do. No kidding.Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostI'm always amazed at how much time/effort people are willing to put in as well.
Just the amount of time that my home teaching supervisor in my PH quorum puts in to tracking me down for HT report each month is staggering. Seriously, like 10 phone calls to home, cell phone and work. And all of this before the 5th of each month.

This is awesome.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostReportedly, the division of family services in the church has been told to prepare for a massive growth in the church membership--specifically, 50 million members, right now. They're hiring thousands of counselors as we speak, even non members (if they agree to counsel according to the principles of the church, of course), to be prepared for this influx....
I've been in meetings with the folks at LDSFS as they've gone through a fairly significant and in depth assessment of the services they provide and how they can be more effective and efficient.
They are getting rid of counselors right now - I've spoken to several that LDSFS has helped out the door, take their clients with them, etc. They've helped some transition to another agency, some they've helped to start their own agency. But they've decided they aren't going to be in the therapy business any longer.
That said - they also decided that they still want to help people, but more as case managers or service brokers. They'll help folks identify what services they need and then put them in touch with agencies that provide those services. So I suppose they could be hiring for those positions - but not for counselors.
They're also looking at doing away with the adoption services they provide altogether. They'll probably still provide support for pregnant single women, and are planning to allow families to put their profiles on their website - but they won't be doing the homestudy or working on placement any longer. They will be referring folks who want to give an infant up for adoption to go to an attorney or other adoption agency - but won't be facilitating it themselves.
At least that is what the guy in charge at LDSFS was telling me a few months back - and what has been confirmed by folks I know who work there. But I suppose things could've changed.

This is from a Catholic writer at Patheos, and for some reason (
) it made me think of this thread:
The whole piece is worth a read.Hot damn, do I love this Church. Everything from its weirdos and disaffected souls to its ancient rituals and odd byways.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”
― W.H. Auden
"God made the angels to show His splendour - as He made animals for innocence and plants for their simplicity. But men and women He made to serve Him wittily, in the tangle of their minds."
