I remember when I was really young, when meetings were at different times instead of in a 3 hour block, we used to have the sacrament passed in Primary. Seems strange now, because later that day we would have it in Sacrament meeting as well.

Everything else you describe sounds about right for the past 35 years. I think Sharing Time has always been the official nomenclature for the large group gathering of singing and talks. I never understood what was being shared. Probably mostly colds and pink eye.

You misheard. He was actually quoting Gotye.

My next question: why is it called "sharing time?" This ward is my only frame of reference, but our Primary consists of two meetings, each one lasting an hour. One of the meetings is a traditional party affiliate meeting for indoctrination and propaganda, complete with chalkboard and other visual aids. The other hour is a massive gathering of little mafiosi foot soldiers in the main primary room. The Primary capo di tutti capi will conduct, welcomes new recruits, oversees the reading of a brief talk and scripture, and expresses an abundance of general love towards la famiglia in the room. Often there is some crying for effect. She then hands the time over to the Underboss, who leads all caporegime and their soldiers in structured song for the remainder of the meeting. Sometimes Made Men will pop in, stand in the back of the room, and share a few thoughts with the entire crew, always under the oath of omerta, of course.

If I remember correctly, the "lesson" portion of sharing time is supposed to be presented by one of the classes on a rotating basis. That's the sharing part.

This (if the Primary Presidency is organized that is). I averaged 2-3 times a year doing the sharing time activity during my recent three year stint.

            3. Gospel instruction by the Primary presidency. This portion lasts about 15 minutes. Members of the presidency use the scriptures and follow the current outline for sharing time as they prepare and teach.

Interesting. I don't know that I've ever seen it done that way.

                • Gave a talk yesterday on something priesthoody. It went over very well, I even had the foyer dads sticking their heads in the door, babies on chests. I shamelessly copied a few sentances from SIEQ, two posts from KillerDog, and a PM from Wuap. You guys write very well. I would have taken something from Indy, but he's too irreverent.

                        • While I was on-call and unable to participate, my wife "learned" the official church policy on homosexuality. For instance, men aren't born homosexual, they choose it. There were bigoted and racist comments that got my Molly Mormon wife all worked up. It must have been pretty bad, because that is all she's talked about since I got home today.

I was in a ward with a large primary that "delegated" sharing time to primary teachers. Nothing like trying to include a large class of Sunbeams "sharing" with the rest of primary every couple of months. Then the PP called a recent move in to be the Sharing Time Leader. She lasted a little over a month. With a new PP, it got back to the presidency doing the 15-20 minute sharing time.

That's the way I've always seen it done. The presidency doing it.
