They were the equivalent of today's Talmudic scholars. Fascinating stuff, but it's easy to see why Jesus hated it.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

Interesting. I wonder how many languages don't have an expression that means "and then it happened."Originally posted by beefytee View PostDoing a Google search, I was able to find this on the topic.

It seems like those who most make fun of lawyers always seem to be the same ones fishing for free legal advice. "Brother YOhio, I have an interesting legal question for you...."Originally posted by UtahDan View PostHa. I have frequently run into people who have nicely or not nicely teased me about how Jesus felt about lawyers. I always ask them, what law do you suppose those lawyers were expert in? It certainly wasn't Roman law.

I'm trying to think of a place where nothing ever happens, but those places don't have their own language. Is there a dialect called Panguitchese?Originally posted by UtahDan View PostInteresting. Yesterday in Bishopric meeting we learned that the RS had planned an "In-N-Out" visiting teaching reporting thing whereby the sisters would drive their cars through the parking lot, roll down their window, and have a brief reporting session with a member of the R.S. presidency. I SWEAR I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP! (apologies to Dave Barry) They'd even printed up invitations using the In-N-Out logo - a big no-no and coming just after we had a big lecture in leadership training meeting on the use of copyrighted/trademarked materials.

Don't worry. If they let the Chadder's thing slide, you should be fine.Originally posted by BigFatMeanie View PostYesterday in Bishopric meeting we learned that the RS had planned an "In-N-Out" visiting teaching reporting thing whereby the sisters would drive their cars through the parking lot, roll down their window, and have a brief reporting session with a member of the R.S. presidency. Were it me, I'd have a word with the counselor and tell him that while I'm not taking offense at his ignorance, what he said was very offensive and has no place in a classroom where all are supposed to be equal in Christ.Originally posted by Sleeping in EQ View PostNo. The Bishop is a nice guy. I wish I wasn't so new in this ward as I'm sure I don't understand its dynamics.
Ok, so I'd probably leave out the ignorance part.Dio perdona tante cose per un’opera di misericordia

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

The Book of Mormon is about 80 pages shorter in Spanish because you can say "And it came to pass" by saying, "Y aconteció."Originally posted by UtahDan View PostInteresting. The RS certainly doesn't have a monopoly on beating up its members as not being worthy. The men have gotten that treatment for as long as I can remember.Originally posted by Rosebud View PostThis is what is wrong in RS. This. This. This. I am so saddened watching women dis women without even realizing that they're doing so. So many of us honestly believe these things. It's like we've collectively tried to use logic to explain why god's church would define us the way it does then have internalized that logic so thoroughly that we don't see that we're hurting ourselves. It's very disheartening.
YW is even sadder because it's where older women teach younger women our collective, internalized logic (in the name of god) without even being cognizant of the burden they're placing on the shoulders of the next generation.
. I hate to watch it.
The cycle will continue to repeat itself.........
After church yesterday my teen daughter says "Guess what our lesson was about today? It shouldn't be too hard, there are only three topics to choose from."
I guessed "the Temple"?
She said "no, families"
But I was in the right ball park. She reports that most YM lessons revolve around the temple, eternal families, and the law of chastity.

Maybe next Sunday I should put on a dress and nylons and attend Relief Society with many of the other second-class ward members.
Or maybe I should wear a scarlet "I" instead of a neck tie.
Or maybe I should show up with ear plugs and a bull horn. I could then start in on the virtues of Glenn Beck.
After all, satire is superior to sermon. We all trust our own unorthodoxies.
