I've never heard about this. Interesting."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

It is dismissed by Catholics and most scholars though there are some alternative theories. During the time period, when French popes proliferated, those rejected mostly by the Italians, in the 11th to 12th centuries, lots of weird stuff happened.Originally posted by il Padrino Ute View PostI've never heard about this. You could do a bunch of great crime and political corruption mysteries involving popes. Some the worst include:
1. Pope Stephen VI (896–897), who had his predecessor Pope Formosus exhumed, tried, de-fingered, briefly reburied, and thrown in the Tiber.
2. Pope John XII (955–964), who gave land to a mistress, murdered several people, and was killed by a man who caught him in bed with his wife.
3. Pope Benedict IX (1032–1044, 1045, 1047–1048), who "sold" the Papacy.
4. Pope Boniface VIII (1294–1303), who is ridiculed Dante's Divine Comedy, by ascribing him to be in the 8th Circle of Hell for his Simonies. He is portrayed as destined for hell, where simony is punished, although Boniface was still alive at the fictional date of the poem's story. Boniface's eventual destiny is revealed to Dante by Pope Nicholas III, whom he meets. A bit later in the Inferno, we are reminded of the pontiff's feud with the Colonna family, which led him to demolish the city of Palestrina, killing 6,000 citizens and destroying both the home of Julius Caesar and a shrine to the Blessed Virgin Mary
5. Pope Urban VI (1378–1389), who complained that he did not hear enough screaming when Cardinals who had conspired against him were tortured.
6. Pope Alexander VI (1492–1503), a Borgia, [who actually had a Spanish name, Borja, but wanted the Italian authority] who was guilty of nepotism and whose unattended corpse swelled until it could barely fit in a coffin.
7. Pope Leo X (1513–1521), a spendthrift member of the Medici family who once spent 1/7 of his predecessors' reserves on a single ceremony.
8. Pope Clement VII (1523–1534), also a Medici, whose power-politicking with France, Spain, and Germany got Rome sacked.
I like to remember the sordid history of the papacy when people are wont to regale me with the "Holiness" of the office.
And Catholic financial corruption continues to this day. An interesting expose is:

The best part, IMO, is that disguised as a man she fell in love with a fellow monk. So to all other eyes, they were a gay couple. Kind of like the Crying Game, but in reverse, gay dude falls in love with another dude, only to find out...yada, yadaOriginally posted by Topper View Postor the mythical Pope Joan, I mean John the VIIIth?

Per HC talk today, we should listen to conference talks when we workout.
Also, same dude says we should seek after "an Enos experience". This guy's speech affectation (couldn't place it) made his long E's sound kinda like long A's. At the beginning of his talk, the HC informed us his is assigned to the Stake's YSA Ward. I hope those kids aren't getting the wrong message. You're actually pretty funny when you aren't being a complete a-hole....so basically like 5% of the time. --Art Vandelay

I learned that I should have followed the DDD method of 3rd hour attendance.Originally posted by falafel View PostWhat did you learn? that the Church has an addiction recovery program that they stole from AA/NA/GA/OEA/SA?"I think it was King Benjamin who said 'you sorry ass shitbags who have no skills that the market values also have an obligation to have the attitude that if one day you do in fact win the PowerBall Lottery that you will then impart of your substance to those without.'"

Maybe instead of following DDD's third hour advice, you should follow the programs' third step advice.Originally posted by Pelado View PostI learned that I should have followed the DDD method of 3rd hour attendance.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We had stake conference. Pretty good meeting. It was the first conference for our new Stake President, other than the one in which he was called and sustained.
The theme of the meeting seemed to be building our foundation on the rock of Jesus Christ.
Sabbath observance was one of the topics. He emphasized that it is an individual family's choice as to what proper Sabbath Day observance means, and that we should be agreeing on what traditions for observance we want to have in our families. Also, that no one should be judging others over their choices.
He also touched on when we think that what the Bruthern say is off, we should study the issues and seek the Spirit, and not rush to condemn them.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
