I learned that the bishop is willing to call a man as a YM advisor, even after the potential advisor informs the bishop that he lacks belief in the church's claims, is unorthodox and doesn't feel comfortable teaching the YM church doctrine (even something as "simple" as the godhead), doesn't believe in modern revelation and doesn't pray or study scriptures. Even after the bishop is made aware of all this.

My wife and I are the YSA reps for our ward. A regional meeting was scheduled for yesterday at 5:30PM. We didn't go so I can't say but I have to imagine it was very poorly attended. Some people just don't think."It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."

I would rather the bishop extend callings to people who believe those things, but don't keep the word of wisdom, but I also support extending those calls. The gospel is the only pathway to god. The church is a society that is supposed to aid in following that path. Too often we see the church as some sort of calvinist proof of our righteousness when really, people like that potential YM advisor, are the best people to hold callings in the church.Originally posted by Jacob View PostI learned that the bishop is willing to call a man as a YM advisor, even after the potential advisor informs the bishop that he lacks belief in the church's claims, is unorthodox and doesn't feel comfortable teaching the YM church doctrine (even something as "simple" as the godhead), doesn't believe in modern revelation and doesn't pray or study scriptures. I didn't learn this in church and I won't learn this in church as I don't attend HPG, but I did learn this on FB:
Correlation at its finest! In 1899 the LDS Chruch was almost bankrupt. The 1899 General Conference was "the tithing conference" and where Lorenzo gave pivotal instruction about tithing - which defined the church in relation to tithing going forward.
Lorenzo Snow said in the 1899 Conference Address:
"...I plead with you in the name of the Lord, and I pray that every man, woman and child who has means shall pay one tenth of their income as a tithing..."
Conference Report Oct 1899 page 28 (3/5th way down column 2 on page 28) http://archive.org/stream/conference...ge/28/mode/2up
However, in the 2011 Lesson Manual, in Lesson 12- Tithing, the Church quote this talk as:
"....I plead with you in the name of the Lord, and I pray that every man, woman and child ... shall pay one tenth of their income as a tithing...."
Teachings of Lorenzo Snow manual, page 160

And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
