  • All Quiet on the Western Front.

Maybe the goriest, most violent war movie I have ever seen. I have a pretty good tolerance for realism in a war movie, but that was brutal. Bleh.

I didn't care for it either, especially when it veered from the novel and messed with the ending. In my view, the best adaptation was the 1979 made for TV movie with Richard Thomas (of John Boy fame) and Ernest Borgnine.

I liked it, but I see your complaint. The message of the hopelessness of war was done well imo. I would agree with your assessment of the 1979 version, but Richard Thomas' mole always just freaked me out so much I could never concentrate long enough to take my eyes away from that thing. It was huge! It has its own zipcode huge. Oh the horror!!

        • I have always liked the book. I re-read it a couple of years ago.

I get what they are trying to do with the movie. It is an anti-war movie and it is very effective. It is just insanely graphic.

Good to know. I might watch it but it'll be without Mrs. NWC.

            • It is nice to be an adult so I no longer have to pretend to like gory movies. I've always hated them, but when I was a teenager (at the height of the classic slasher flicks), I felt that I had to pretend that I did. I spent many hours in theaters with my friends staring 3 feet to the right of the screen.

The goriest movie I have seen in the last 20-25 years is probably Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead.

OK but those are works of art! As long as you make me LOL I don't mind that kind of gore.

Congrats! How long ago did you become an adult?

Oh, I love them. I am just saying that is about the outer limit of what I watch these days.

I dunno. That's kind of a nebulous definition. Maybe 10, 15 years ago?

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I read Joyce Carol Oates' Zombie (inspired by the Dahmer case) at the beginning of this year just because I'd read in an article how good it was. It messed me up so badly that I didn't even feel like reading for a few months. I opted out on the series for this reason alone. Call me a wuss, but if a novel left me feeling so low I can only imagine what a series would do.

                            • If any of you loved Roald Dahl books as a kid, or if you have elementary-aged kids, check out Matilda the Musical on Netflix. After, look up who played the Trunchbull. You’ll be surprised (if you wait).

we saw it in the theaters over thanksgiving, and it’s awesome.

That was our favorite play we saw in London. It was so good. On Broadway and in London, Mrs Trunchbull is played by a man. Originally for the movie is was supposed to be Ray Fines, but Covid put production on hold. He would have been so good.

The movie was fun, but it skipped 2 of my favorite songs from the stage version.
