The cynicism toward government agencies is very British. There are a few redeeming characters (e.g. River Cartwright and Catherine Standish), but the Oldman and Thomas characters are pretty much irredeemable. Skipping the series wouldn't be a terrible mistake, but you might get into it if you watch another episode or two. And one has to appreciate a TV show with an original theme song (which provides a pretty good summary of the show) sung by Mick Jagger.

I am talking about how they treat each other. The whole premise is that there is an office where they send the screw-ups who are given loathsome, sometimes blatantly meaningless tasks and they have to endure non-stop abuse from their boss and co-workers. Nobody - and I mean nobody - would survive in a work environment like that for more than a few days or weeks.

Watch 2 more episodes. If you're not interested then call it. But after the third I found myself liking it and wanting to see more.

Bit of a hijack, as I haven't watched to show, but I've read all the books, but regarding this post...

        1. I had the same thought several times reading the books. To his credit, the author does try to set up plausible reasons why they don't leave, but it is still sometimes hard to believe.

        2. It is always funny at the beginning of each book, as we have just finished the previous book with the slow horses saving the day, but everyone's attitude is still "Those screw ups? I wouldn't trust them to tail a target out of a paper bag!", even after their 8th time saving the world or whatever.

Having said that, I did, as I said, generally enjoy the books. They are somewhat cynical, but don't take themselves too seriously, and can be fun.

You are dangerously veering towards Mrs. NWC 'hangups with shows that miss the forest for the trees' level of hangups.

But I get what you're saying. Subsequent episodes sort of address why the agents still put up with the abuse.

One episode in of season two, and guess how many actors I saw from someone’s favorite BBC show???

            • So I binged the rest of Slow Horses on a flight to Paris. I liked it!

Now I am laughing at all of the dumb negative reviews on IMDB. Woke?

I need to watch this. I just finished listening to book 5 last night.

I guess season 1 is books 1 and 2. Season 2 will be books 3 and 4. So I'm a bit ahead of things. They are fun. Jackson Lamb is a funny, very offensive, character.
