What games will be available during the beta?
The nearly 3,000 games on Steam. Hundreds already running natively on the SteamOS, with more to come. The rest will work seamlessly via in-home streaming.
You can play all your Windows and Mac games on your SteamOS machine, too. Just turn on your existing computer and run Steam as you always have - then your SteamOS machine can stream those games over your home network straight to your TV!
I don't know exactly what they mean by streaming, though.

Sure if you install windows it would play windows games. Valve has said it doesn't want to lock down the hardware. As it stands now there are 100+ games that will run on linux.

They mean in home streaming. So you'd steam the game from a pc in the house to the steam box or dongle connected to the TV over your local network.

It is a cool idea but they are taking too long to get it out. Also, Sony's version looks better and feels better, which can't help Oculus much. The Oculus booth was, by far, the biggest draw at GDC. The idea has great promise but perhaps Oculus won't be the one to realize it.

speaking of delays, valve needs to focus on getting the valve box out (which is cool, btw. Also played that!). Ouya's box turned out to be cool, and for $99, not bad. I wonder if the valve box will stomp it, though.

                  • Hearthstone - free to play card game set in the World of Warcraft universe. Very similar to the Magic: The Gathering card game that I messed around with briefly in the mid nineties (but I understand still has a pretty good following). This game is very simple and fun to play as a casual time waster. They just released an iPad client for this. Recommend people take a look. Very good touch screen tablet game. I am CollyWolly#1598 if you want to send me a friend request.

Faster Than Light - also newly out on the iPad, this one is a port of the popular indie PC game. Its a space ship management game where you manage the resources of your ship as it is being pursued by a hostile fleet. There is combat, a simple economy, and text based adventure game story telling. This one will set you back $9.99, but my 8 year old son is loving it and I think it's a cool educational type game that makes you use math and teaches optimal decision making and priority management in stressful situations.

                    • I just got Mario Kart 8. It's a great Kart game and about what you would expect at this point. I guess that's good and bad. I like this a lot better than the Wii iteration, mainly because it doesn't allow the other 15 racers on the course to gang-rape you if you take the lead; driver skill is a more weighty consideration and it doesn't reward cheap power-ups that much. Having said that, the game doesn't feel like there is any new ground being broken, even though there is a paraglide feature on the karts and anti-gravity modes for upside down racing.

Somehow despite that, it still feels really familiar, despite it having clearly better presentation than any other Kart game up to this point. My favorite Kart game is still Double Dash on the Gamecube b/c of the 2-player on 1 kart mode, even though other people didn't like it. They've upped the ante on the graphics, music, number of levels, and characters. The control is very easy-- it's simple to do the drift charge, etc. Maybe it's because I started out on the 50cc mode, but I haven't really found the engaging exhilaration or challenge in this yet.

I have yet to play the online mode, which pits you against racers locally or globally. Mario Kart has never been my favorite game by any stretch, but I got this one on the strength of the reviews. I guess I'd have to say that if you're historically into Mario Kart, this is a must-own. I bet if you have kids they'd post up and play this day and night.

                          • I played through Call of Duty: Ghosts and it was really fun! I enjoyed the space station shootouts and the underwater assassinations as well. The german shepherd control parts weren't tedious like I feared they would be, either. Cool game.

                            • So in the last couple of weeks, I've started a YoutTube game casting channel. My focus is Blizzard games (specifically Starcraft 2, Hearthstone and World of Warcraft), but plan on branching out depending on how things go.

I bought a $150 microphone (which the wife can also use for her singing endeavors, so win-win), and my more recent uploads are, I think, pretty good. Right now I have about 20 videos, and adding at least one a day. Here's an example:

Anyway, if you're interested, here's my YouTube channel and my Twitter page.
