The images and the filmmaking in that movie are just incredible and their impact on a giant screen is one of almost overwhelming grandeur. Granted, it's hella long, the heroine is grade-A annoying and the melodrama can be cloying, but I'll still go see it play on the big screen the next time I get a chance. And Rhett is a badass.
GL is nothing if not a big screen kinda guy.

    • I watched Shawshank Redemption the other day during some down time. It had been a while. What a great movie. My favorite part is when the Chief of the Guards is about to push Andy off the roof and Andy starts bargaining for some nice cold suds for his co-workers. Something about it cracked me up.

One thing I didn't know was that the aforementioned Chief is also the voice of Mr. Krabs on Spongebob. I guess once you get typecast as an abusive authority figure you can never shed it.

I should add that I've tried to watch the movie on DVD and can't really get into it. Lawrence of Arabia is similar (although it's a much better movie.)
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

        • For our Tuesday Night at the Movies outing we saw The Conspirator, Robert Redford's film about the trial Mary Surrat, the owner of the boarding house where John Wilkes Booth, her son and others conspired to kill or kidnap Lincoln, VP Johnson and Secretary of State Seward. The movie's nicely done and was informative, but I didn't love it (I'd give it a 6.5 on a 10-point scale).

The parallels to today (military tribunals vs. civilian courts; using the public's fear of attack as a means of controlling opinion; discrimination against citizens because of presumed sympathies for the enemy's cause, etc.) were almost too obvious, but still interesting. Walk, don't run, to see it.

Geez, what a manipulative load of bunk. I really lost it at the end where they had a series of scrolling messages. A sample:

"The next time you say grace before a meal, pray for food that is healthy for the planet."

"There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

Also, I am enjoying it, even though it may be the mother of all chick flicks.

EDIT: Just finished it. I want those 4 hours back.
I had the pleasure of watching this in a theater when they re release this film in 1967. I was eight at the time and my friends and I didn't really care what was playing we just wanted to go watch a movie on a Saturday afternoon. I remember when she shot the soldier, something burning and the scene with all the injured laying on the ground. Other than that it was a long four hours for a kid. I remember around that same time Fess Parker playing Daniel Boone and what a great movie that was. It's a good thing kids don't give out the Oscars.

Like Roger Ebert, I need to have an important character I care about in a movie, and Scarlett was just too hard to like -- although I began to see signs that she'd softened and become less self-centered towards the end. I liked Rhett. But the overall experience didn't move me much, other than being fun to watch.
Why do you need to care about a character to enjoy the movie? Some of my favorite characters are creeps. Col. Landa (Christoph Waltz) in Inglourious Basterds being one example.

Hey, you watch movies in your way, and I'll watch them in mine.

                  • I watched The Next Three Days over the weekend. I found it to be an extremely effective suspense movie and a good entry in the "prison break" genre. Lots of buildup for more than two-thirds of the running time before the shit hits the fan. Why did this movie come and go so quickly upon its release last year?

                      Because it sucked!

                      (I watched it Friday night)

Wow seriously? I thought it was well acted, well directed and enjoyably suspenseful. I think Paul Haggis is a decent screenwriter and director when he gets away from trying make something "socially relevant" like Crash and just concentrates on telling a fun story.

No, it wasn't that bad. It was one of those movies that I had little reaction to. Neither bad nor good enough to care much about.

Also saw Burlesque this weekend. Now that was bad!

                          • I saw Source Code this weekend. It was definitely better than I thought it was going to be be, but I had pretty low expectations going in. I would grade it as a B-. There are a ton of crappy movies out right now, but this film is one of the better pieces of crap. IMHO
