Pretty damn good movie. And a damn shame it took you so long to see it.

The best scene in that movie is when Kate Hudson's character was told that she was sold for a sixpack of beer. She physically recoils, then gathers herself, and defiantly asks "What kind of beer?" As if trying to give herself an infinitesimal extra boost of esteem, hoping for a premium lager.

      • Friday night my wife and I saw "Water for Elephants" because my daughter and her friends were watching another movie in the same theater complex and we wanted to see something while we waited. It was OK, but I recommend waiting for the Netflix stream or a DVD. Christoph Waltz steals the movie, I think, playing a pretty convincing and surprisingly complex bad guy. Robert Pattinson pretty much plays himself. Reese Witherspoon was not memorable. Plot seemed to require a bit more suspension of disbelief than most.

We also watched "Searching for Bobby Fischer" on Netflix. I had never seen it all the way through. Nice, fun to watch feel-good movie with a great cast - Ben Kingsley, Laurence Fishburne, William H. Macy, Joan Allen, a young Laura Linney.

        • Last night my friend and I went and saw the 25th Anniversary theatrical re-release of Top Gun. It was glorious. There was a big group of guys there who all came wearing white t-shirts and aviator sunglasses. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen again.
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

          • The Tillman Story - damn that was a tough watch. The raw emotion of his brother at a very public funeral was just tough. Looking at the family participate in these public hero coronations, they were in complete anguish. In fact, I am surprised they agreed to participate. Talk about dedication in deciphering volumes and volumes of classified documents and re-inserting names and places of the redacted. I loved it, despite my uneasiness.

            • I just saw "The Fighter" on the plane. I felt like great acting was coming at me from all sides. Christian Bale deserved his Oscar.

              • I took my five-year old to see a silent movie at the Organ Loft last night. This one was a Buster Keaton feature called Our Hospitality. It's a great one. Start watching at 1:06 for a pretty spectacular stunt:

This made me laugh. I would love to see a studio market their movie using a review like that.

                  • Cool stunt, but I'm sure glad I didn't live in the era of silent films.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Christoph Waltz also stole Inglorious Basterds -- well as much as a supporting actor can. Seriously, it was the best performance I think I've seen in years. He's terrific.

Hey, I wouldn't take her if she didn't want to go. She's a big fan of Harold Lloyd. If you've never been down to the Organ Loft to see one of their silent films, you should try it sometime. The organist Blaine Gale plays the live accompaniment and the Wurlitzer organ fills nearly the entire building. He provides music, sound effects, etc. and they always have a packed house for the comedies. It's a lot of fun and a nice window on a bygone era of filmgoing.

                          • Speaking of silent movies, they had Birth of a Nation on TCM a couple weeks ago and out of curiosity I turned it on during the last 5-10 minutes.

Holy mackerel. Klansmen were riding around and they had what appeared to be a bunch of white actors wearing blackface makeup. I assumed the Klansmen were the bad guys, but apparently they were the heroes of the movie. The black guys were portrayed as a gang of marauders trying to steal away the white women. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Original title of Birth of a Nation: The Clansman. And yes, it was used as a recruiting tool by the Klan for years.
