During a LONG drive last week, as I was looking for a radio station in the middle of no where, I picked up NPR as they were doing a short interview with the author of The Martian, followed by an interview with a NASA scientist who is on the team planning the next trip to Mars.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostI assume you're old enough to have had to participate in what my elementary school (and others, I presume) called "Disaster Drills", even though the nature of the disaster was never specified. These were the "duck and cover" exercises where we'd kneel under our desks and hold our hands over our necks, while the teacher would pull the curtains. All this was intended to protect us when a 20 megaton warhead was detonated over our heads. Bridge of Spies shows this being done, along with a classroom flim about the effect of an atomic blast. This left the kids (and me back in the early 60s) both shocked and fascinated.
As for The Martian, I enjoyed it, even if it wasn't great. Some very nice visuals and CGI, although nothing groundbreaking from a storyline perspective (Apollo 13 was much better). An essential element of enjoying a movie like this is my being able to buy into the science part of it. I didn't care much for Gravity, despite the spectacular visuals, nice pacing, etc., because it was so clearly wrong from a science perspective (e.g., debris from an explosion coming around again on the same orbit as the damaged spacecraft). I'm dumb enough that I couldn't spot any obvious flaws in The Martian's science (although I'm certain there were some), so I was able to play along and enjoy. Again, very good and entertaining, but not great.
Finally, I watched part of Fury again on HBO or whatever the other night. The battle scenes in that remain at the top of any war movie I've seen.
The author talked about how he initially came up with the idea for the book, and thought that the science part was the interesting part. At first the book was free online and he would add chapters as he wrote them. People would email and correct him if he made any mistakes with the math or with other issues in the book, and he would correct them as he go. Ultimately it was published and no longer online for free.
The NASA scientist stated one of the reasons she really enjoyed the film is because the issues he faces and his solutions to those issues ARE so realistic. She indicated that the only unrealistic aspect is the storm that causes his isolation on Mars to begin with. Due to the atmosphere, Mars is not capable of producing a storm that would have the force seen in the movie. But she allowed him that creative license as a means of creating the situation for the story.
So - turns out it's mostly real stuff!

Me.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI dont plan on doing anything special to go see the new Wars. I will probably just buy a ticket as the release date nears and they keep adding screens to show it. Normally I would just duck into the theatre w nice seats at an 11:00 matinee when nobody's up since it's going to be showing everywhere, but I'm xmas road tripping this year, wanting to get an early start on the 18th. I also wanted to IMAX the SW movie, so it works out that I got a ticket on the fandango app for a 7:00 p.m. showing on the 17th. Perfect.
I heard that the pre-sales 8x'd what the previous record holder, Hunger Games, did just last night alone. Biggest movie of all time- bout to make Titanic its bitch.Last edited by Commando; 10-20-2015, 02:18 PM."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! If it is not rated in the top 25 by AP, my household won't see it.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI dont plan on doing anything special to go see the new Wars. Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

They are advertising some marathon of all the movies then the new one, I'm thinking about letting my boys skip school and have a fun day with them.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI dont plan on doing anything special to go see the new Wars. My siblings at home were talking excitedly about doing this. The marathon begins at like 3am. I pointed out that they would likely have a blast watching 15 or so straight hours of Star Wars movies and eating movie theater food, they quickly opted for the midnight showing of episode 7 only.Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostThey are advertising some marathon of all the movies then the new one, I'm thinking about letting my boys skip school and have a fun day with them.Fitter. That would be really fun.. maybe a bit much. I heard the first one starts at like 3:00 a.m. and you get intermissions all along the way, culminating in the 7:00 showing.Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostThey are advertising some marathon of all the movies then the new one, I'm thinking about letting my boys skip school and have a fun day with them."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! More than existing on a diet of popcorn and raisinets, I think you'd start regretting the decision at around the 15 minute mark of the Phantom Menace.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
