Mad Max: Fury Road - super awesome movie. It would have been even better on the big screen. The whole thing was great from the story to the action to the acting. Not a great movie but it was super awesome.

Another recent Western entry to consider is Slow West, available to stream on Amazon Prime. It kinda has a Coen brother's vibe.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostUnforgiven is also one of my favorite westerns. I recently rewatched the Coen brother's remake of True Grit and liked it more than the previous viewings. Still not in the same category as Unforgiven.
For fans of Unforgiven, another western to consider is The Proposition (2005).You're actually pretty funny when you aren't being a complete a-hole....so basically like 5% of the time. --Art Vandelay

Speaking of Eastwood, I caught Thunderbolt and Lightfoot the other day. The Eastwood scowl (and obligatory shirt-less scenes), Jeff Bridges in drag (looking good too), car chase through a drive-in movie?!
Long live the 70s.
Also, they don't make movie posters like they used to...

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot has always been a favorite of mine. Some scenes in that film remind me of the Coen brothers and I wonder if that film had an influence on them. I'll add the scene where George Kennedy, playing a hardened misanthrope gangster, is driving an ice cream truck trying to earn money for the heist.Originally posted by Walter Sobchak View PostSpeaking of Eastwood, I caught Thunderbolt and Lightfoot the other day. You left out the part where he tells the kid to go "f%$# a duck".Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostThunderbolt and Lightfoot has always been a favorite of mine. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. The movie has everything! Like hitchhiking with a redneck and a racoon accompanied by a trunk full of rabbits.

Man on Wire was on tv tonight so I watched it again. It's one of my favorite documentaries and I'm really looking forward to the new movie (The Walk) based on the same story."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. Stand By Me - Had never seen it. Good movie. River Phoenix was great as the ringleader kid.
Trainwreck - Disappointing. Thought it was going to subvert rom-com tropes; instead, it turned them up to 11. At least a 1/2 hour too long, if not more. Hader was good. Tilda Swinton was great in her 2 minutes or so on screen. Might be the most chameleon-like actor in the business.

Never Sleep Again- Nightmare on Elm Street featurette/documentary that covers the whole saga. Way too long- about 4 hours or so
but it was pretty interesting.

Stand By Me is one of the great movies of the 80s. Unless you're under 30, I can't believe you hadn't already seen it.Originally posted by Armenag View PostStand By Me - Had never seen it. Good movie. River Phoenix was great as the ringleader kid.

The summer of 86 must have been awesome. Top Gun, Aliens, Ferris Buellers Day Off, Stand By Me. The most underrated comedy of the 80s, Back to School, also came out that summer.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I think movies were more fun in the 80s b/c you didn't get to just watch movies anytime you wanted- at least not like now. If you got to to the drive-in or the theatre you really relished it."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

I'm looking at the Wikipedia list of the top grossing movies of the 80s. Here's what 9 year old me see in the theaters:
Ferris Bueller (a memorable experience, a great movie);
Karate Kid Part 2
Star Trek IV
One Crazy Summer (Bobcat!)
Crocodile Dundee
Labyrinth
Howard the Duck (I shit you not)Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
