Has anyone seen Everything Must Go with Will Ferrell? I keep wanting to watch it on Netflix and it just doesn't happen.

The Amazing Spiderman


Cool movie! I loved it. Great great casting, writing, and cgi. What more do you want? Of course the basic origin storyline is very familiar, so that was lame, but they played it very close to the vest this time as far as not straying from the comic books. I was very relieved that my fear of them "contemporizing" the story with an emo-spidey didn't happen (I'm looking at you, Spiderman 3).

I was also relieved that Spidey didn't have Magic Webs that shot spontaneously from his wrists (the webs are synthetic like in the comics). I also liked that Spiderman appeared to credibly belong in high school, that he was a gangly skinny kid, and that there weren't a whole lot of frustrating moments where the superpowers were misused or ignored as a plot device like you see in a lot of these movies (where you think "he's effing spiderman-- shoot a web and get out of there!") - the action was really on point and about every bit as good as you could expect a production to be.

The casting- Andrew Garfield as Spiderman is awesome. He plays a shy, sweet Peter Parker who doesn't turn into an uber-confident dick as soon as he gets his powers unlike the last version. In fact, he retains a level of physical awkwardness throughout, spidey-powers notwithstanding, which adds a layer of depth and credibility rather than frustration with the character/action. Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy is awesome, and so is Dennis Leary as her dad. The whole cast seems capable here with Martin Sheen is Uncle Ben and Sally Field is Aunt May. I also noticed that the guy who plays Flash the Jerk looks like a high school kid and not a D-1 linebacker in this one, which was refreshing.

While this movie wasn't a drastic shift in tone or plot from the last ones, I think it was a pretty vast improvement worth watching and I'm looking forward to the sequel, which I'm assuming will carry us even further away from the trajectory of the last trilogy. I think the only way you hate this movie is if you hate Spiderman to begin with. If you couldn't stand the first Sam Raimi incarnation, you probably won't like this either.

I saw Eternal Sunshine a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it. I'm a fan of Jim Carrey in serious roles much more than in funny ones (same with Adam Sandler, which is why I'm excited for Punch Drunk Love). I've seen part of Y Tu Mama Tambien, but never finished it. I wasn't feeling it--I'll have to try again. John Malkovich is on my queue and now Thin Red Line is, too.

I have a lot of night shifts that get slow around 2 or 3 am where I can sometimes get in a movie, so I've decided to go back and catch a lot of the great movies that I've missed. It's tough to find ones that stream on Netflix. so keep em coming.

Haven't seen and added:

Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! -- I've seen a few things from Almodovar, but not this one. Also NC-17 so maybe don't watch in the ER!

The last two are Nicolas Winding Refn's first two films. He did last year's Drive (my favorite of the year, which is also on streaming, btw), and I've heard a lot of talk about his other two pictures, so I'm going to check them out.

Re: Adam Sandler in a serious role, "Punch Drunk Love" is great, and I really enjoyed "Funny People". It's ~30 minutes too long, but it's a nice dark comedy.

ESOTSM is my favorite movie. The acting is great; the soundtrack is beautiful; and the storyline is profound.

Thin Red Line is one of my favorites. Watched it again a month or two ago. The whole sequence of taking that hill is a classic.

I put off watching Being John Malkovich for a long time because the plot sounds so stupid. But I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

Saw Spiderman today. I was outvoted by the others, I wanted to see Moonrise so was reluctant. I should have trusted Commando's review because we like the same movies. Pretty good movie. The best part: 2.5 hours of Andrew Garfield. He's in every scene. This wasn't in your face emo, but I love those soulful looks Garfield can send. And his gorgeously tossed hair. I'll probably see him in another 10 movies, but he'll always be 'Duardo with the chicken to me.

Emma Stone is so hot and at the same time not hot. How does she accomplish that? She convincingly portrays nerds and hot girls with equal aplomb. In Amazing Spiderman she's something in-between.

I really liked the movie. It's a hard reboot, and I think some if not most of the backlash (not too much, It still has 77% RT) is due to the retreading. It's significantly better than Spiderman 1 in terms of casting accuracy, writing, character depth and realism, and every other way I can think of outside Kirsten Dunst's boobs.

I'm making it sound better than it is. It's good, and better than Spidy 1, maybe 2, and definitely 3

The only QT movie I've seen was Kill Bill. Way too violent for my tastes. I can deal with language or sex, but I have a harder time with gratuitous gore (really not a fan of gratuitous language or sex either, I guess)--probably funny, considering my job, but oh well. I still haven't seen Pulp Fiction either. Are all his movies that violent?

Finally caught The Big Lebowski a few weeks ago. Hilarious. So far, except for QT, I trust your taste.

I watched Rome in the ER, so I already have a creepy porn-loving reputation.

The only QT movie I've seen was Kill Bill. Way too violent for my tastes. Kill Bill is built on camp-violence as a nod to the old kung fu flix from Hong Kong. As such, it is extremely violent, but not the sort that disturbed me at all because of the context. QT has a good dose of violence in his movies, but not at all to the level of Kill Bill.

Lots of shooting in Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Inglourious Basterds (which i revisited on Sunday, btw- awesome). Not a whole lot of violence in Jackie Brown- may be a good place to start w your QT. Pulp Fiction is my favorite (b/c of the smart writing, dialogue and just plain fun-to-watch acting by Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis), Kill Bill is my 2nd favorite for much of the same reasoning (and I love me some Uma, Lucy Liu and Carradine is fantastic in this too), then Jackie Brown b/c I like the dialogue and Pam Grier, and Reservoir Dogs/Inglourious Basterds are less of favorites b/c of their extremely dark tone. Can't wait for Django Unchained!
