  • Even if someone else successfully free solos El Cap, I don't think anybody is doing it in under 4 hours like Honnold did. That was blazingly fast. Even the cameramen were commenting at how fast his ascent was.

BTW, Honnold and Caldwell hold the fastest climb up El Cap at just under 2 hours which they did last summer.

A few people die there almost every year already. Some climbers, some just stupid instagram bloggers.

What was that guy doing in the costume partway up? That was so random.

        • Leaving Neverland, the devastating charges of molestation by two young boys (now men) against Michael Jackson. I believe them. Amazing how similar this movie is to Abducted in Plain Sight. Michael Jackson seduced the parents of his victims just like “Bee” seduced his victim’s parents. Even now, one of the mothers says that she had a special relationship with MJ separate from her sons relationship with Michael.

amazing the Michael Jackson fans who denounce these men as opportunists, and it is true they are suing the estate. But they still present compelling cases, and who knows how children react to being groomed and victimized. Who says what the timetable should be for coming to terms with abuse.

The wife and I watched this last weekend. Fantastic movie.

Disagree. Remove the music (which is not the movie) and this movie is pure trash. Legit made-for-tv lifetime network garbage. I think people are having a difficult time separating the story and the music from the actual movie.

Good grief. Old people, little kids, blind people have climbed Everest. Now a paraplegic is going to give it a shot. There is risk there and it takes some training, but nothing remotely similar to a free solo of El Capitan.

Let me spell this out for falafel, et al.: A free solo climb like that is such a physically difficult and zero-margin-for-error thing to attempt that most of the best climbers in the world wouldn't dream of attempting it. You almost have to have a death wish. Like it said in the doc, you either win the Olympic gold medal or you die. There is no middle ground. I can see how being the first person to do that would drive someone to take that risk. But to be the second? Third? I am not so sure.
The only data point re: if someone will do the Honnold climb again; just how many world-class Asperger's climbers are out there?

Yep. It got panned way too much. An Oscar contender? Hardly. But a fun film to watch.

I'm going to watch this against my better judgment. I'm not the world's biggest MJ fan, but I do love Off the Wall and Thriller. If this ruins Human Nature for me, so help me...

There are many variables that might lead someone to try to repeat Honnold's feat. Doing it faster, doing it on a different route, either more or less challenging, or doing it at all. None of these guys expect to die. The risk of death is simply not a factor that will stop them from trying it. Btw, they do keep track of the fastest ascents of Everest both with and without oxygen. The free solo of El Cap was previously inconceivable. It is now very much conceivable and very much in the public consciousness. Again, there will never be a long parade of people trying this climb, but I would still be very surprised if someone (and likely many someones over time) does not try it again fairly soon.
I've been trying to find how many have free soloed Half Dome after Honnold climbed it and haven't been able to come up with anything. That might be a pretty good barometer for if anybody is going to try El Cap. I'm with you in that someone may try it but I think Honnold will still be the only successful one.

That's a good idea. If there haven't been others, maybe JL is correct.

He did it in June 2017. Probably a little early to say there won't be others.

Why isn't the music the film? No one would make that film without the music. The music is the point as much as anything. There were a lot of guys that accepted they were gay and had to deal with the AIDS crisis (such as one of my best friends from HS), but they aren't making movies about them very often. It's about more than the music, to be sure, but the music is integral to the film.
