Macbeth (recent Fassbender version) - Decent but not great. A little too artsy-fartsy -- too many smoky shots, too much breathy whispering. Good cast but I don't understand why they cast a ton of Irish and English actors (and Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth) instead of using good Scottish actors, of which there are plenty. Highlands scenery was good. I suspect I would prefer a version done by the BBC folks behind The Broken Crown. Someone should do a fully Scottish version -- might need to wait for MacAvoy to age into the lead role, though. Fassbender was good.

Becoming Warren Buffett is an outstanding documentary about Buffett and provides loads of fascinating tidbits about his life, his family and his and approach to business (it helps that he is pretty much the polar opposite of our President in nearly every respect). Mrs. PAC and I strongly recommend this one. It's on HBO but I suspect there are ways you can stream it.

It sounds awfully hagiographic. He is now being portrayed as this magnanimous philanthropist, but for most of his life he was not.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostBecoming Warren Buffett is an outstanding documentary about Buffett and provides loads of fascinating tidbits about his life, his family and his and approach to business (it helps that he is pretty much the polar opposite of our President in nearly every respect). It talks about that, including the tension with his first wife (who was very much a social activist) on whether, when and how much to give. His lack of giving wasn't due to real greed (he lives more simply than many here on the board, and certainly more humbly than any other billionaire or even multimillionaire I'm aware of), but more to focus. And it's fair to say that by the time his life is done, he will have given far more to charitable causes than he would have been able to do if he'd given it away earlier; i.e., he has made money at a far faster clip than the recipients of his largesse would have been able to do.Originally posted by Topper View PostIt sounds awfully hagiographic. Awfully hagiographic? See the film and decide for yourself; comparing his views, self-regard and lifestyle with Trump's. Huuuuuuuuuge differences.

He doesn't have the same faults, as Trump's are too many to count, but he is self-serving and awfully self-consumed.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostIt talks about that, including the tension with his first wife (who was very much a social activist) on whether, when and how much to give. My understanding is that Sam Walton was pretty frugal.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostIt talks about that, including the tension with his first wife (who was very much a social activist) on whether, when and how much to give. I think that's right. It's interesting how certain multibillionaires live so far beneath their means. The major shareholder and head honcho of my largest client is worth many billions but insisted on flying coach, including international, until he hit his mid-60s and his physicians insisted he fly business class to reduce the risk of embolisms.Originally posted by Pelado View PostMy understanding is that Sam Walton was pretty frugal.

Ha, the only reason I knew what I wrote was because when I insisted flying business to NYC for a meeting with the client, they shamed me with that story. I flew business anyway.Originally posted by Topper View PostYou know a lot of billionaires. Maybe a few can donate to BYU to help increase the size of its endownment.

So I guess this is getting it's own Netflix series much to the chagrin of alt-right snowflakes everywhere.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostBack to the movies, we’ve seen Dear White People, St. Vincent and Nightcrawler in the past few days, all three of which have been getting strong reviews.
DWP was a bit of a disappointment, suffering from some weak direction, occasionally bland dialogue, and my lack of recognition of current pop references. Best thing in the movie was probably Dennis Haysbert’s performance, no surprise given his brother’s fine career as a WR on BYU’s ’84 team

Just looking for a movie to watch and decided on "John Wick: Chapter 2" since it got 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. Neither my wife or I had seen the first one so we didn't know what to expect. We both hated it, wish we had left half way through it. He must kill at least a hundred guys but of course they can never seem to kill him, it's ridiculous.
