  • Saw Dawn of the Planet of the Apes last night. It was very good ... better than Rise, in my opinion. The CGI is really pretty spectacular. The actors playing the apes really have remarkable performances, though it is hard to tell how much is acting and how much is computer generated. Unlike most summer action blockbusters, every minute of the film was riveting. The characters had a lot of depth, and you sympathized with almost everyone to some extent. Even the villain (who you don't realize is the villain until about half-way through) is a character you sympathize with up to a certain point (sometimes even more than Caesar).

I was very skeptical of these movies when Rise came out. I was expecting them to be laughable. I'm very surprised at how the turned out. One of the best movies of the year, so far ... and certainly the best blockbuster. Highly recommend it.

Looking forward to it. Was surprised how good the last one was. I was a big fan of the original.

            • Saw Snowpiercer this afternoon. Very interesting, stylized sci-fi action movie from Bong Joon-Ho. Quite a bit of bloody violence, for those that are squeamish, but it is cool to look at and pretty entertaining. Not sure there is much depth to the allegory of the film, and the ending doesn't really make much sense, but I would recommend it--for Tilda Swinton's performance, if nothing else.

Saw it tonight. Not great but not bad. Probably something I'd have rather seen at home. Edge of Tomorrow was better.

Caught that one the other day. It felt like a Paul W.S. Anderson movie spruced up a fair amount and greatly enriched by Tilda Swinton's bizarre performance. Agreed that the allegory is shallow and it doesn't all add up, but the movie was decently entertaining.

Completely agree. Cool facial expressions on those apes though!

                      • Begin Again was surprisingly good. Those who saw Once and enjoyed it will like this, a story about a spurned songwriter (dumped by her budding rockstar boyfriend, who is played by the lead singer of Maroon 5) and a record producer on the skids. Although there are several contrivances, most can be overlooked because the actors (Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo, among others) are very good at making one believe in the transformative power of music.

There is a truly great scene early on that's set up by showing what a tepid performer Knightley's character is, and what a miserable drunk Ruffalo's character is, but then Ruffalo hears Knightley playing and he imagines additional instruments and background performances kicking in and her song is transformed, leading one to believe that they might be as well. The Ruffalo character's last name is Mulligan, by the way (some of the contrivances are a bit more hamfisted than others), and the movie provides some interesting surprises on how do-overs and rebirths might turn out differently than what one might expect. Rated R for a few eff words but very inoffensive.

Different strokes for different folks. I thought Edge of Tomorrow was just so-so.

Against my better judgement, I watched Tammy last night. I feel dirty inside.

I wonder how many times she'll make the same movie a la Farley, Ferrell, Sandler etc...? Seems to work.

We saw a trailer last night for St. Vincent in which she plays a character that doesn't appear to be crude, mouthy or exceptionally loud. With Bill Murray playing the title character I have hopes for this; it has an October release date.
