Here's my predicted ending.

Spoiler for My predicted ending:

Walt finds the Ricin cigarette and dumps it out in the yard, symbolizing a clean break from poisoning people. Next we see him getting into a convertible after he eats his birthday breakfast with the big barrel of money in the back (which he hid shortly after he got into the minivan and before he went to New Hampshire) and driving away into the sunset with the wind blowing his wavy new hair. He looks back at the money and gleefully laughs, reminding the viewer of Beatrix Kiddo at the end of Kill Bill. Epilogue is that he ends up buying for a song that hacienda in Mexico where Gus poisoned that entire cartel. He's out in the back cleaning the pool in his white underwear when he hears a knock. He opens the door and it's Marie. Tension. Then Marie breaks out into a smile and is like, "We did it!" She was in on it the whole time. Jaws drop and minds are blown.

I don't care about cheesy happy endings. But Gilligan is being disingenuous when he talks about his surprise that fans are still rooting for Walt. He's not surprised by it. Like you say, he knows from the Sopranos that fans of a show will cheer for a protagonist under almost any circumstances. His continual harping on that issue in the commentary is just stupid.

Re: punishment, my point is that Vince can't punish me as a fan by making more good episodes. He can't punish me by making Walt do certain things. It's TV, and I'm never going to feel so connected to a character that I feel any sort of betrayal, no matter the situation. So any statements about Gilligan using last season to punish those who still pull for Walt are just as stupid as his commentary about his surprise that people pull for Walt.

When has he said anything about punishing anyone? The only thing I have heard him say is that he doesn't understand how people can still root for Walt, justify his actions, and blame others for his misfortune. I am with him. I don't understand it either. No amount of good can justify what Walt has become.

This is why this argument is stupid. No one wants him to get away with everything on an island in the Caymans. And no one thinks he's a lovable teddy bear. We keep beating each other's dead straw men.

Actually, I have talked to several people that want exactly that.

Agreed. Show runners usually seem to avoid interpreting their work for the audience, trusting their ability to portray their intent on screen. That is seeming ever more like the better strategy.

I love the fact that Gilligan talks about the show. He has never told anyone what to think about it. In fact, he consistently takes the position that his interpretation of things is not definitive. He talks like a fan because he is one. Listen to the insider podcast if you get a chance. He is a really smart and likable guy and isn't trying to force his interpretation of anything on anyone.

The "Walt couldn't be more evil" camp was predicting he would go darker and darker, ultimately killing his wife maybe.

In this last half season he has:
--completely walked away from the drug empire
--refused to kill Hank for his survival
--was willing to give away his whole fortune to save Hank
--argued against everyone, ie Saul and Skylar, to preserve Jesse's life before giving in
--took full blame for the crimes to absolve Skylar, who had just completely betrayed him

This is Walt basically going in the opposite direction of what you guys were saying.

LOL. He also ordered a hit on Jesse. Turned Jesse over to the nazis to be tortured and then killed. Got Gomie killed. Framed Hank as a drug lord and ultimately got him shot in the head. Kidnapped his daughter. And got into a knife fight with his wife in front of his son.

Convenient how you forgot about all that.

He's dying of cancer. He's gonna die.

edit: Walt winning will not be him living. It will be dying the way he wants, with his legacy preserved. That's what I'm hoping for (but not necessarily predicting) as a Walt fan.

Why would you hope for that? I just don't get it.

He was, and Saul is a clown. I'm betting the clown in the box is Saul in a casket, and Skylar putting the clown in the box makes me think that Skylar kills Saul.
