  • Nice.

Along with a new job has come a new camera, the Canon R5, moving into the mirrorless world. I haven't got it out for a serious outing (hopefully this weekend), but so far the eye identification and focusing system is unreal. Takes all of the hard part out of getting focus on the head as the birds are moving about.

    • You are probably taking more advantage of the mirrorless than I am (R6). I still haven't messed around with most of the focusing features.

      • For wildlife and portrait, it's game changing. You point it near the subject, the camera finds the closest eye and sets focus there and just plain sticks to it as the subject moves.

For landscape, not much has changed.

I would have gone R6 if I wasn't shooting birds. The megapixels help a lot.

        • For an example of the detail in an R5 image.

It's crazy. I'm sure the high megapixel Nikons and Sonys are similar.

          • I knew of the higher resolution on the R5 and considered it. But in the end 20ish MP works for me. And the cheaper price

Why did you go with a full frame? Wouldn't an APS-C like the R7 be better for wildlife?

The r5 gives you 17.3 MP in crop mode, R7 gives you 32.5 so roughly twice. Cropping the R5 image to crop sensor size is still a great image. The focusing system on the R5 is reportedly better. The buffer size for handling the 20 frames per second in electronic shutter mode is bigger. The R5 has 3 dials available for adjusting aperture, shutter speed, and ISO without having to go to a menu or pushing a button first.

The biggest advantage however is relating to birds in flight. I get a 17.3 MP crop sensor image, but it can be located *anywhere* in the full frame image. Essentially more margin for error if I can't keep the bird in the center of the frame. For example, everything else being equal, I miss this on the R7.

                  Cool. Thanks for the tutorial.

I don't see a lot of wildlife in that refuge.

There's a story behind that. It's offseason mostly and it's hunting season. The intended trip was down to Lower Klamath to try to photograph the wintering bald eagles, but we were rained out with freezing weather likely settling in before we intended to head back. So we took a quick look for a place that would not have bad weather. I hope to get back there in the spring. I do have a few bird images, but mostly resorted to doing a bunch of landscape stuff.

If you spent much time in Moses Lake, you probably ran into some of my relatives.

We stayed in Othello, didn't get into Moses Lake at all really, other than take a quick look at some of the parks to see if they had shoreline that we could scan for waterfowl. None of the party had been there previously, so we spent quite a bit of time just driving throughout the refuge. The eroded lava flows are quite stunning.

I've got a fair amount of extended family in Othello, too.
