  • Went with the Scouts salmon fishing this morning. The creek is basically in our backyard. In the spring, trout run spawning in the creek before returning to lake Ontario. In the Fall, salmon run. The boys hooked several, and we finally landed one. It took roughly 10 - 15 minutes to get it on the bank for some photos. I helped the young Scout bring it in, holding the pole behind him while he worked the reel, telling him when it was going to run and jump, then circle back. It wieghed roughly 20 pounds and was caught on 12lb test, with a size 10 hook and a pink rubber worm as bait. Pics were taken on my iPhone in HDR:

    • Wow!! That's crazy to catch a fish that big in a stream of that size.

There were at least six or seven salmon that size in that hole. They were too big to get up over the little obstacle just above it up stream, or if they did they couldn't get over the beaver dam 20 yards further up.

There are both Chinook and Coho Salmon in the Lake. Each year our Scout troop also provides service at the local hatchery as they are trying to restore Atlantic salmon to the lake:

            • Walking around Portland, hadn't been on this bridge walking before, because I'm lame, lazy, or both. Great fun with a wide angle lens.

Fun image and compelling. Have you considered cropping it differently to give it a letterbox (wide horizontal) feel? That might cut out the bright light in the upper left and emphasize the crescent moon a little better. The colour is great for the time of night.

There are green lights shining on the bridge which gives it the color, I believe they can be programmed for different colors also. I need to return with a tripod so I can combine images in HDR and keep the ISO down and expose for the bridge and the moon. Cropping from the top would lose the top of the bridge in addition to the light, which I'm hesitant to do. I have others from the same evening that might be better served by that type of crop. Also need to return with a full or near full moon and get the telephoto lens out.

Have you thought about throwing rocks at the light? Or even hitting it with a paintball gun to block out the light? Don't be afraid to go the extra mile to get that shot!

You're right. It would cut too much off the top of the bridge. Next time you go, you could take a small step ladder to change your angle a little and perhaps accentuate the lines leading to the moon.

I have brought along a smallish 4 foot ladder on shoots before.

                          • Another one of the bridge. I'm planning to head back down there either tonight or tomorrow evening. Clear skies and near full moon.

I quite like this image. Could be fun to see what some HDR toning could do on it, though as is the lines are mesmerizing.

I juiced up the contrast of an already contrasty scene. I had played a bit with Google Nik HDR Efex Pro, but never arrived at something I liked better than this edit. And yes, so many lines. I need to return and get a 2 to 3 second exposure with a light rail train in the picture to add even more curved lines...but I may not like it better. This is another one I'm considering printing and hanging. Though I think I'd take out the moon, not sure it adds anything here and was not exposed properly anyway.
