That style seems to fit the blonde-haired subjects better, producing a glow around their heads. Not sure if it just doesn't work on a brunette or if there's something they did differently than yours.

Here's an updated version, I had to warm it up, I agree that the cool tones just don't work on a brunette or with the clothes she was wearing.

I dont think this is the case. Look at the burned in lighted part of the top of the smallest girl's head. The source of that light has to be above and behind the three girls. It cannot be coming from behind them.

Where exactly is the sun? Above them, out of the frame; but how high in the sky? The shadows they cast suggest the sun should be lower and perhaps in the frame, but with that amount of cloud cover, the sun is peaking through? Of course the shot is taken at elevation, not sea level where the atmospherics are different. The sunlight reflection line lies to the left of the tallest, presumably oldest girl, so it could exclusively be sunlight. Regardless, it's not unheard of to backlight subject matter (the lighting is discussed towards the end of the video):

The missus took these through the smoky haze on a lake cruise near Banff. The eagle was scanning for food and then took off after something in the lake. Though they're not extraordinary, I thought the pics were especially good, given that she was using a 2.8 70-200mm lens with a 2x extender and the boat was moving.

The missus took these through the smoky haze on a lake cruise near Banff. The eagle was scanning for food and then took off after something in the lake. Though they're not extraordinary, I thought the pics were especially good, given that she was using a 2.8 70-200mm lens with a 2x extender and the boat was moving.

Well done, I can attest to rocking boats with long lenses being problematic. Glad the 2x is working out--has she been happy with it? Where are the puffin pictures? I had a 2x on a rental 400mm lens on a boat for about 5 minutes before I removed it and put on the 1.4x instead. Could not get it to focus as I couldn't hold the lens on the subject for very long and the focus acquisition speed with the 2x is significantly slower.

Were these significant crops?

You can post elsewhere and link it, which is what I try to do most of the time, Flickr, Facebook, Google photos, etc.

I like Flickr because it's share functionality will auto-generate the code to insert that will link the image in multiple sizes, and allow a reader to click on the image to take them to Flickr to view the full size.

I figure I should move my images to some other service that allows 3rd party hosting. Anybody have any favorites? I'm pretty sure Facebook compresses images, so that's not a great option. Flickr? I've been using Photobucket to host images that I post here, but I recently got a message from them that they'll no longer let me do that without paying through the nose. I figure I should move my images to some other service that allows 3rd party hosting. Anybody have any favorites? I'm pretty sure Facebook compresses images, so that's not a great option. Flickr? Something else?

Facebook does compress, but it's not bad if you downsize before uploading, I link a lot of my images from there. I typically will size them as a maximum 1400 pixels wide and a maximum of 900 pixels tall. On most current 1080 widescreen monitors they look good if you view them full size. I use Flickr also, but I dislike their lack of security options. Specifically, I want to control which images are downloadable and which are not, at least by album or similar. Right now it's a global setting. Seriously considering SmugMug or ProPhoto and paying the annual fee. I also use google photos, unlimited as long as they fall under a certain resolution, but above a certain size they eat into your free 15 Gb of space. Those that have direct upload capability from LightRoom get used the most.

Yes, she did a lot of cropping. And she likes the 2x a lot, despite the balancing issue and somewhat slower speed.

I may post some puffin pictures later. When we return from our current trip her coffee table book for Ireland should be back from Shutterfly. The pics are great.

No compression mentioned anywhere that I found. At least one Reddit user did a test to upload and download and the checksum came out the same. Appears to be a nice option.
