Fun fact: the Deseret Alphabet glyphs are officially embedded in the Unicode standard now. You can type them on your keyboard.
Of course BY didn't come up with the concept - the alphabet was based off the Pitman alphabet of 38 sounds used in Pitman shorthand, which looks like this:
Pitman.png
(NOTE: It kind of reminds me of the Caracters document. Note that Pitman shorthand was invented in England in 1837 - well after the Caracters document and the publishing of the Book of Mormon. Lest someone try and contend that the Caracters document was a ripoff of Pitman shorthand).
Although BY didn't come up with the concept of the Deseret Alphabet, he did throw his considerable religious, social, and political weight as a regent of the University of Deseret, now known as the University of Utah, into promoting the use and teaching of the Deseret Alphabet. The alphabet had already failed to catch on and was no longer being encouraged by the time Brigham Young Academy was founded in 1875.
So, we can really place the wisdom of the idea, or lack thereof, and it's subsequent failure squarely on the shoulders of the University of Utah and Ute fans in general.

They came over last night. I taught him how to say his name by letter. Bo Jr quizzed him, and he picked it up easily and without error.Originally posted by Bo Diddley View Post
Nice. My grandson loves learning new systems. I recently taught him how binary numbers work and the 24 hour clock. I think he'd get a kick out of the phonetic alphabet.

I understand why people hate Elon Musk and believe his existence is a threat to civilization. I don't agree with this assessment but I get how one can arrive at that belief. But stuff like this is a genuine human marvel. And because it's from his company, this won't get the attention it deserves.

There's no doubt Musk has benefitted society. He's probably a net good for civilization, but it's close

Musk is an incredible visionary and entrepreneur. He is also an idiot when it comes to politics."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

Poor guy just wanted to kill a CEO and now the whole world knows he can't have sex. Life is sometimes cruel.
On a more serious note, maybe I am wrong here, but I think we are starting to see that this guy had some pretty serious mental health issues. It's been interesting as some stuff comes out the cognitive dissonance it causes among the some of the group that has held him up as a hero. I've seen a decent amount of posts about this guy not being the real killer, he's a patsy, etc. because they had pictured him as some kind of avenging Superman.
