Watching the NBA playoffs, I was trying to come up with some consoling balm about my lack of athleticism, and it occurred to me I was never called for a goaltending violation.

I have a recurring dream where I'm playing basketball, and I'm in my college form, and I'm running up and down the court, not tired, jumping high, and even though it's a dream I realize there has been a transformation in my body, and I'm ecstatic. And then I wake up and realize it was just a dream and that I'm really old and out of shape and can neither run nor jump, and then I'm sad for 20 minutes.

I would buy a book of the musings of PAC.

One of my favorite internet time wasters is to go to Govdeals.com and see what they're selling. It's kind of a trip. Everything from real property and personal vehicles to scientific measurement and gym equipment.

Looks like a super cheap way to pick up an old pickup.

Reminds me of the BYU surplus sales.

Salomon makes a very large number of niche outdoor footwear. They've designed shoes for what must be a subset of a subset of a subset of the active outdoorsy population. How is this any kind of business model.

Brand loyalty from skiers? My mom is not an outdoorsy person but she looooves Salomon ski boots and bindings from back in the 70s and 80s. And she has bought some Salomon shoes because of it. I honestly don’t even know if they are the same Salomon brand.

I actually had a full “today I was x years old” moment because I thought I had just realized that they were two totally different companies. I even figured it must have been a spelling difference I didn’t notice that caused the confusion. Nope, same people.

Wall Street Journal published an article on scientific journals, “paper mills”, and fraud that happens in the scientific publishing industry.

Fake studies have flooded the publishers of top scientific journals, leading to thousands of retractions and millions of dollars in lost revenue. The biggest hit has come to Wiley , a 217-year-old publisher based in Hoboken, N.J., which Tuesday will announce that it is closing 19 journals, some of which were infected by large-scale research fraud.

In the past two years, Wiley has retracted more than 11,300 papers that appeared compromised, according to a spokesperson, and closed four journals. It isn’t alone: At least two other publishers have retracted hundreds of suspect papers each. Several others have pulled smaller clusters of bad papers.

Although this large-scale fraud represents a small percentage of submissions to journals, it threatens the legitimacy of the nearly $30 billion academic publishing industry and the credibility of science as a whole.
I’m curious to know what those CSers with science and academic backgrounds think about the issue…

I saw this story yesterday and I can't get it out of my head. It breaks my heart for these poor kids and the widowed wife. The whole thing is so senseless it's difficult to comprehend.
