Yes, Cannon Beach is where we go. We park on Madison, and walk across the street. At Madison, you get a real surf, without interference from the river. Today I dug a trench 75" long and 24" deep, and put a blanket in the bottom and took a nap. The cool sand below the surface, and the shelter from the wind make it the perfect place to catch a few zzz's before the drive back to Portland. My wife said I was asleep for 40 minutes - now that was a good nap.

    • I took this video in pitch black night in Taylor, Arizona on July 27th. They got 4 inches of rain that day. Be sure to turn your volume down before playing this. It was so loud that we had to scream to hear each other once we got out of the car. There is no visual, just the din of thousands of frogs singing their song. It's one of the coolest things I've ever experienced. Absolutely deafening.

I know exactly where you were. Just south of Snowflake,Az. and north of Show Low,Az. Snowflake was our rival in HS football (At least we liked to think so, but I think Show Low and Blue Ridge (Pine-Top,Az.) was more their rival).

My brother just below me lives in Show Low and teaches there and is the Asst. coach for the wrestling team.

Man, I love the northern parts of Az. Were you heading north to I40 or south to I10?

Our friends' parents live in Taylor. We were driving east on I-40 and headed to Taylor to hang out with our friends (they drove up from Phoenix), ride scooters, and spend the night at their parents house (this big hacienda that they've built a piece at a time over 30 years). It rained so much that we wound up staying inside most of the time and playing guitar and singing.

Show Low, Snowflake, Eager used to put out BYU recruits heavily.. Blue Ridge produced big recruits for ASU and UofA.. I played against both "Sprotte" brothers (Jimmy and Scooter) from Blue Ridge.

My Fav. Player was Dustin Johnson (From Round Valley HS). I think he graduated so I am not sure if I ever played against him. I think he graduated from HS in 1990 so he may have been a senior when I was a freshman..

Looks like you missed going through my hometown of Payson,Az. Too bad.. Love that country.. The road you took is not as scenery or nice.. Holbrook is a hole in a wall.. I hated traveling there for football & Wrestling matches. The football field is kinda cool since it is nestled up to this very high cliff. Its pretty cool.

But it is all flat and dirt.. You go south and you hit the green areas of Az.

I expected it to be more desert like Phoenix. It looked like the African Plains.

Yep. Ahhh. Good Ole' northern Az. Arizona is very different across the state. Did you get a chance to head up to the 4-Corners?? The place where you can stand in 4 different States.. But it would be out of the way to get there. Talk about feeling alone in the world.. That drive will do it to ya..

No, we came in through Colorado City, down to the South Rim, Taylor, Petrified Forest, and then straight on until Albuquerque.

                        • I was at a four-way stop this morning and all four vehicles arrived at the intersection at the same time and they all turned right. It looked synchronized. I don't remember ever seeing that.

I would answer that but the 'promote Ohio and Dayton' bans are still in effect after the crap this state pulled last November.
