Sunrise at a low tide can be quite stunning. We got there one morning on a -2 tide and you could walk around the back of Haystack Rock. And there was almost nobody there. I have to go back and rework these images some day, this was downloaded from Facebook and then uploaded. You should probably not mention that it's really best to get there an hour before the low tide

    • Loved Silver Falls as a kid. One of my favorite things about growing up in Salem. I need to go back and take my kids. Seeing the pictures of the Oregon sites makes me feel extremely nostalgic.

      • For you Oregonians, I grew up calling it Silver Creek Falls. That’s what my dad calls it. Did it change its name and drop the Creek in the last 30 years or so or have I been raised to call it the wrong name my whole life?

I've always called it Silver Falls State Park. But I've only been an Oregonian for 14 years.

I've only lived in Oregon since 1972. It's always been Silver Falls to me. Only been about ten times - once to a Civil War reenactment. It's quite possible that Silver Falls was the Garden of Eden - it is one of the most beautiful places on God's green Earth. It's extremely popular on hot summer days - and because it's huge - there's plenty of room.

My sister and her husband just had a house built in Seaside (by the LDS Chapel) where they plan to spend their summers. They plan on exploring the Northern Coast for a few years. The average range of temps during the year are 52 low - and 75 high. Sounds like heaven to me. I'd like to end up on Oak Street in Cannon Beach - the North end of the beach - and let the world disintegrate without me noticing anything more than the waves.

Clack, consider me a convert to that doctrine. My finite brain can't comprehend your infinite possibilities. But the Garden of Eden in Silver Falls? I'm on board.

                • I'm 3 weeks away from a week in a VRBO on the north end of Tahoe. I'm assuming we'll be spending a day or two at the lake, a day in the mountains, maybe a day just laying around and doing nothing or playing cards or something.

But knowing that some of you have been more places than me - anything I should consider? All my kids are adults now - no grandkids yet - if that narrows down the suggestions.

That's a great plan. I would love to retire on the coast or Oregon. Cannon Beach/Oregon coast vacationing has been a tradition in my wife's extended family for decades. I can sit and watch waves for a long time.

Same here, or at least have a home on the coast. I could even live there during the winter. But Mrs. NWC can only tolerate the wind in small doses; ie ~2 times a year. If I ever had property there, I would be living there solo most of the time.

Preliminarily, I'll note my amusement that BM's thread, which was a brazen attempt to have us turn our backs on the Church (the thought makes reason stare!), quickly went literal and is now a good vacation-planning tool. On to your question...

I can answer whatever questions you have about Tahoe, having spent lots o' time there, most recently a couple of weeks ago. One quick tip: you can pick up a 48-page or so tabloid published weekly that's free at newstands at every grocery store in the North Tahoe area (it used to be called North Tahoe Truckee Week, but that's changed to something I can't remember). It includes current events for the week, along with archived information about hikes in the area and other activities.

Among the don't-misses are a drive to Emerald Bay and the overlooking Eagles Falls and Inspiration Point parking lots where Tahoe's most iconic view is available. A fairly short, moderate hike up to Eagle Falls from there is fun, but parking after 9 am or so can be a problem. The longest hike I think we've done was to the top of Mt. Rose just over the Nevada state line. Fairly long and tough, but the views are great.

I'd skip the "Truckin' Down the Truckee" raft rental as it's slow and can be a bit tedious, but many like it. Of course, you can always re-enact this Board's ride around the lake (72 miles) or its ride to Donner Summit, although we may not be able to host the post-ride dinner this time.

One splurge idea... A few months before the pandemic's onset, we had all of our kids and grandkids together for a week at Tahoe (it's our favorite place to gather). Our last full day we took the whole mob parasailing. You can do that at a lot of other places but I doubt there's another place with better views hundreds of feet above the water. I went up with two grandsons, one of which was Parrothead's young son, who later sent me a framed picture of the three of us going up into the air, with the handpainted caption, "BEST DAY EVER!!!." It was total blast that the kids still talk about. Pricey, but worth it for us.

I can give you other specific recommendations if you like, but you'll do just fine once you get there. BTW, we'll be there again the last week in July; too bad we won't cross paths.

Yeah - I got a pretty good chuckle out of that myself - and it tickled me enough I decided to post this question here.

Dang! So close! We're leaving on July 23rd.

Thanks for the suggestions. We've only been once before - we stayed one the southeast corner, just up from Stateline. We drove around the south end and saw Emerald Bay that time. Hiking to Eagles Falls sounds like a fun idea - easy for everyone who wants to keep it short. Especially after the drive from the north to the south end - it will be nice to get out of the car.

Speaking of which - we never drove the entire lake circumference. We came in from Carson City, stayed down by Stateline, and then drove around the south end as far as Tahoma before turning back. Is there a significant difference between driving down the east versus west side? If we're going from Incline to Emerald Bay, it makes sense to just drive the whole thing to see something different. But if the east side is a prettier view, we could just stick to that.

Parasailing sounds like fun - we'll have to give that some thought. We'll be in Incline Village - is Kings Beach the best beach on the north shore as far as planning to spend a day in the sand? What are the other options if it gets crowded that you like?

                          • Speaking of Tahoe - where is the best place to have a house on Tahoe - if money was not a concern? Daughter is up there right now with husband's family. I was wondering if it was a good place to have a vacation home.
