    Yeah that's a lot.

I do all the planning in our house. If Europe falls through we're gonna take a road trip to see some places I've been with work that the missus has missed. I'd take a look at Hawaii as well. Next year we're gonna go to London during the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

October in Oregon is when they plug and sand the greens - don't come expecting pristine playing conditions. But - automatic 2 putts are a good way to score as well.

They better not be punching the greens at Bandon in October. Or at least, do one course at a time.

They schedule in advance. If I was you - I'd check the dates just to be sure. October is October.

              • Hot take: Golf sucks. I think you can get the same thing out of a nice croquet set for your front lawn.

I think you mean wrong take. My evidence: the golf world is exploding right now. Record new club sales and profits. Can't buy used clubs, can't get a tee time, Clack is back, etc. Croquet hasn't sold a new set in 40 years. There's still a surplus of your grandma's old sets at the thrift stores.

I checked with them. They do maintenance in "spring and fall", weather dependent. Not firmly scheduled.

                    • 10 weeks wait on new clubs. I went with New Level Clubs - just to get some in a timely manner.

Probably could have pulled out your mom's old croquet set and had just as much fun in your front yard.

                        • Going to Oregon next week. No kids, just me and the Mrs. We'll be staying in Hillsboro near my brother's place. We have the following itinerary:

                          Monday - Drive there
Tuesday - Spend an agonizing day visiting my 92 year old MIL in Salem. I have to pay my "taxes" on this trip up front.
Wednesday - Day trip to Oregon Coast - Cannon Beach is only an hour away from Hillsboro
Thursday - Day trip to somewhere - hike? waterfalls? Looking for anything interesting to see or do besides homeless people and burned out and boarded up buildings in Portland
                          Friday - Drive home

Anyone have any recommendations on things to see and do on our Oregon Coast day trip? Any recommendations on a second place to daytrip within 1-2 hours of Hillsboro?

The Mrs. and I went to the Oregon Coast the summer before I finished at BYU. Based on my research, Cannon Beach seemed the most alluring destination, but I opted instead for Seaside, since it was less of a burden on the pocketbook. We enjoyed it.

Canon beach is beautiful and always busy. I second what Pelado says, look for smaller towns that have just as beautiful of a beach. Seaside is fine, though I'm more familiar with areas south of there. You can't go wrong with the stretch from Rockaway beach-Tillamook Bay-Neskowin-Pacific City. Of those, Pacific City is the most Canon Beach-esque but the furthest south. Still not a super long trip from Hillsboro. It is one of my favorites. There is a large sand dune right next to the beach that everyone likes to climb and get a great view, and the kids love to run down balls out.

Tillamook is a nice town that you can catch on your beach day. If you're bored, you can do the cheese factory tour thing and eat free cheese and get ice cream. There is also a really interesting air museum there that is housed in an original WWII era hangar for blimps (I believe).

Portland doesn't bother me as much as others. If you're going with kids OMSI is a first rate museum, the zoo is pretty, and Powell's Book Store is still really interesting. They have a solid mormon section! Pittock Mansion is a pretty cool turn of the century mansion. Go do the tourist thing and see Multnomah Falls. Still beautiful.

Wild card: if you're going to Salem anyways consider a half day trip to Silver Falls State Park. It's ~20 miles east of Salem. There is a 9 mile easy loop that passes by 10 waterfalls. You could do half of it and still see some beautiful sights. I'm not exaggerating when I say it is as close to Hawaii level pretty as it gets.
