  • Being retired is nice. Just got back from my second vacation this year - Maryland. Went a visited a brother and while there did some of the sights - Baltimore (FT McHenry and the Aquarium), Washington DC (The Air/Space Museum Annex at Dulles and the Folger Shakespeare Library) a couple of battlefields (Antietam and Harper's Ferry) and last but not least the Naval Academy and Annapolis. Was well worth the trip. We spent 4 hrs at the Air/Space Annex and I could have spent another 4 Spent 2 at the Folgers and that was about right. Spent 4 hr at Antietam and again I could have spent the whole day - Mrs. Happy not so much We then drove up to Harper's Ferry. It''s only about 20 miles away. There is a battle field there (part of the Antietam campaign) as well as the old Armory and John Brown. Did spent not much time at Harper's Ferry. We didn't get there till 4PM and I really didn't want to drive back in the dark. The drive back from Harpers to Annapolis is just gorgeous!!! The freeway follows the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers for a while.

In Baltimore, we went to Ft. McHenry and got there early enough to participate in raising a replica 15 star/15 stripe flag. For me that was one of the highlights of my year. If your are in the area the park raises the replica flag every morning at 10 AM and the guests to to help with the ceremony. After wandering around the park we went over to the National Aquarium. That is what Mrs. Happy really want to go to. Ended up spending 4 hrs there.

We also spent some time in Annapolis, saw the state capitol and the Naval Academy. If you have access to military installations - the Naval Academy Museum is a great time - traces the history of the navy as well as some of it's heroes, John Paul Jones crypt is there as well a James Lawerence' Flag for "Don't GIve Up The Ship", Nimitz' uniform and table from the signing of Japan's surrender to end WW II. It also has a collection of construction models of 18th/19th century war ships - both American and British. Some have rigging, but most don't. For me, extremely interesting.

All in all had a great trip.

I may be small, but I'm slow.

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to, "The United States of America ", for an amount of "up to and including my life - it's an honor."

With the tropical storm (not quite a typhoon) moving in, our flight from Legazpi to Manila was canceled and it looked like it would be several days before it would clear. So my sister called a local member who is a professional driver and we raced from Naga to Manila to try to outrun the storm. The distance between the two cities is less than 250 miles, but they don't do freeways like in the USA so it took nearly 9 hours to make that drive with all 6 of us squished together in a van. The rain was really coming down causing lots of flooding on the roads. There were also at least a couple downed trees that we drove around. Driving in the Philippines is a different thing, and this drive turned it up to 11.

The storm wasn't really affecting Manila yet but I was concerned it might start causing cancelations by the time our 5:45 am flight was ready to take off. So we switched to an earlier flight out of Manila - going to Seoul instead of Taipei.

We are now safely in Seoul with a long layover before we proceed to San Francisco.

The wind here is over 50 mph - with intermitant rain - the typhoon is just east of us here.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes.
